My friend moved back to the U.S. after a few years living in China, where he recently purchased a phone he really likes that uses a SIM card.

Did I read recently that Verizon is opening up its service to phones like this? Is it possible for him to use this phone with (preferably) Verizon or any other U.S. carrier?

meaning that SIM technology is GSM whereas Verizon is CDMA. your friend may be able to use it on AT&T or T-mobile, but you would have to see which GSM frequencies it is set to, cuz some other countries use different ones than we do.
