The Near Future Of Our Networks.

There are some things that I question with regards to VZW's Open Access and the future of wireless phone networks in general.

HTC appears to be on a marketing push towards the "direct" selling of phones to us in the USA.

I think it could be a great thing in some ways, but that will logically also be very dependent on the network provider and what relationship they have with a specific manufacturer.

So with that being said, and with regards to VZW's near future "Open Access", is the industry gravitating towards a scenario of where there will just be a network provider such as VZW, AT&T, etc., and consumers will be able to purchase "network specific" phones d...

yes...thats exactly what we are moving towards. Hopefully sooner than later. Its tough to tell when this will all shake out, but it should be interesting to see what happens to the cell industry over the next few years.

Yup, I agree, hopefully sooner than later. So the next statement and question to go along with it that I would have would be:

Based on the fact that we all know that Verizon chooses to customize manufacturers' phones with their own UI, take out and/or cripple certain features, and basically make changes to whatever specifications they deem necessary and do so for whatever reasons they have. Is the main issue going to be the synchronization of the relationship the providers will need to have with manufacturers and vice versa in regards to standardizations for "that" provider's network and what the phone's specs will be or what?

I just think it would be an awesome thing if in the near future we could look at a manufacturer's line up ...

which will be great for the companies that run the network. It will put the cell phone companies' complaints where they fairly belong.

this will end up being a huge plus for the consumer. Most people will still purchase their phones with an agreement to get a discount instead of paying $100's of dollars, however open access will also help lower the cost on some of those phones for consumers and the carrier. Also carries will end offering better discounts for people who get their phones subsidized at the store(maybe in the way of free activations) The biggest plus will come from the area of consumer education..this will let people understand how much their phones are actually worth instead of thinking they can just come and get freebies any time they want. All in all it will create more options for phones and contracts and choice is always good. with the intro of this and Ve...
