i760: Data still connected after send/receive image via MMS

slp

Apr 30, 2008, 12:06 PM
I've searched and found some contradicting answers. So to recap, 1) I will not be charged to send/receive images 2) Images = MMS = data 3) Data connection is required to use MMS

So my question(s),
1) Why am I still connected to Boardband Access after I've sent and/or receive an image?
2) If I am charge for pix/messages, wouldn't the (active) BA connection constitute usage thus being charged for data?

If I am entitle to pix/messages w/o charges for data, I would prefer so and not disable the data.

I wasn't able to find anything about the active connection after send/receive images.

A known issue, according to a person I talked to in support. MMS uses your data connection and if you do not have a data plan, you run the risk of being charged data fees. Not because of the message, but because of the continual connection to the net that might result.

I currently have unlimited but will switch to Pay soon. From further research, I've found that the connection will become "dormant" and I will not be charged unless I do something that requires the use of the connection; email, surf, etc.

Can someone confirm?

Maybe he needs it for remote PC desktop? Perhaps he needs a device that operates Goodlink? Perhaps he is running something to access Lotus Notes on a remote server?

Or mebbe he wants to be cool and have a PDA just for looks.

you tell me.

Yes, I use the Internet through wifi. It was the reason I got it. 🙂

well you'd still need a text package to send sms/mms (yeah i know you don't techinically need one) so i don't see why you should incure data charges for an MMS message...

I have unlimited text/pic. For PDA, pictures uses the data connection to send/receive, so by having the connection still active, I assume that I will be charged. However, it seems like I won't since the connection becomes dormant. Again, I'm assuming, so I hope someone can confirm it.

well your text and pix both use the data network... that's part of the reason verizon's network is so sound, because voice and data are seperated to keep from bogging each other down among other things. My thinking on it is why would you incure data if you don't need data to send/recieve any MMS or SMS on any phone... doesn't make any sense to me

I had the i760 for about 2 months. I had the $24.99 plan, didn't think I needed unlimited because I have WIFI at home/work. I speak from experience. If you don't open a pix/flix message, you WILL incur a overage. In my case, a $150 overage. They may have fixed the glitch, from what I hear, but at the time, VZW didn't have a answer. So I paid the bill, and promptly sold my i760 on ebay. I since had the Voyager, and currently use the 6900. So I would go unlimited if I was you, hopefully you'll be $150 smarter than me.

Text and picture messages DO NOT incur data charges. Sending or receiving a picture message will connect you to the data network and will leave you connected to the network until you either disconnect it or it eventually will time out and disconnect you on its own. During that time that you are connected to the network there is a chance that data transfer could occur and there could be usage charges.

Maybe that's what happened to me then. I went over my bill with VZW, and that's what must have happened. I must have been charged for not opening pix/flix messages overnight.

and the data does stay connected after sending/recieving an MMS. I normally turn it off right away, but have forgotten a few times. Point is, I have yet to see more than $10 worth of data on my bill because of this Last month I sent/ recieved 256 pix and the data charge was less than $3.00.

I didn't get it for the data, I use the Word and excel functions on it. 🙂 The wi-fi works fine for the data for me.That's why I picked this phone. I would much rather pay $2-$10 a month for the few MMS I do send than pay $44.99/ month for the data I can get free with the wi-fi on this device.

wi-fi = free but limited mobility
evdo = dedicated network for total mobility

bottom line ... you pay for mobility. how much do you value mobility? me personally, I could care less ... but other people may care more about it.

Thanks for the info. That's what I wanted to know. 🙂

Here's something you might want to take a look at... you can change the setting so once a MMS is sent/receive it disconnect the data right away if you set it at 0.
