Any reps out there with any information on when verizon will be in Oklahoma city? There a quite a few of us that have been waiting for Verizon to come along and it was rumors more then two years ago that they were, then I found a listing for a tower license for 89th&sooner road in Oklahoma city for verizon! Any information would be much appreciated!

...the only way Verizon can get into OKC is if they buy out one of the two carriers in there right now. IIRC way back when the cellular auctions happened, the FCC decided to allow just two providers for places like Oklahoma City, known as the "A" side and the "B" side. They did this, I think, to prevent local monopolies, but in practice it's created duopolies in a number of local areas which is almost as bad. Right now I think the two companies there are AT&T and US Cellular.

Okay johnny slick, I live in OKC and you are sadly mistaken......so far off base that I am not sure that you should even be on phone scoop. SPRINT, NEXTEL, ALLTEL, ATT, T-MOBILE, U.S. CELLULAR, CRICKET, and numerous prepaid services are all available in OKC with their own networks and their own licensed spectrum. Verizon already purchased their license and have stated building out their network, they have posts jobs for cell technicians on websites such as monster and career builder and all I want to know it when are they gonna open their doors. So anyone who has pertinent information about this topic then please share! Thank You

Actually the other poster was at least somewhat correct. I don't know what they exact details are but it does work that way somehow. Maybe it's that only one CDMA carrier can be on Network B and one CDMA carrier on Network A or something. I know we have the same situation in Indiana. US Cellular has the license in a small part of the state and Verizon can't offer service there.

The reason Verizon can't offer service in that small portion of Indiana at the moment is because they don't have any PCS spectrum for that area (not that they'd be willing to build a PCS in most of USCC's rural B side territory), and they haven't made a decision what to use their AWS license for the same area(th...

1. Flaming does not get you into high esteem with other people who post on Phonescoop.

2. I *believe*, and somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, is that the FCC auctioned off the rights to two companies per market. Those two companies can then, in turn, allow (usually as the result of money changing hands) other companies to put up cell towers in that region. I'm sure there has to be something like that involved because, well, New York has that same A-side and B-side issue and *everybody* has their own sites built up there.

Again, I'm pretty sure it's US Cell that's in there or at least was US Cell before they were bought out. It could be Alltel now (although as a tech I know that SID still comes up as US Cell). Whoever it is, they wo...

couldn't you just go get a verizon phone from another city and wait it out and then switch to a local number when verzion comes?

If I remember right when I was last in OKC I had Verizon Wireless displayed on my phone and not Extended Network, so wouldn't that mean that Verizon Has its own coverage there?

Maybe you could try looking at the Verizon Coverage map online. It is very helpful to look at. IF you go to prepaid, (which I know is for prepaid) it shows the network coverage that verizon actually owns. They don't let their prepaid roam for free like post paid verizon customers.

Also I think I was able to send a picture message in OKC. You are only able to send picture messages in OKC if you have True verizon coverage and not...

Oklahoma City is in the "extended digital network" at this point. Perhaps YOU should look at the coverage map. If you are on Nationwide pricing, then you can still send pictures and text (that was the whole point of it). Now for the OP...if the tower license has been acquired and construction began it is roughly 1-3 years before service is launched. Unfortunately, there isn't a concrete answer to give you of the exact date service will start...but rest assured, if they're hiring...it's coming.

But you can't send pictures messages in extended network and I know i sent one from there. OKC has EVDO from verizon doesn't it. I guess I better check my coverage map!

A & B side, did you mean 1900mhz PCS that U.S. Cellular Operates or the exact same 1900mhz PCS with EVDO Rev A that Verizon currently roams off in Oklahoma that Sprint Operates..........or the 800mhz & 1900mhz spectrum that Alltel acquired when they purchased ATT??????? Dont forget the Spectrum that Cricket owns....then there is the GSM spectrum that Cingular (Recently changed to ATT) and Tmobile operate. I was making fun of the fact that you don't know what your talking about! The FCC makes spectrum available to carriers as long as it doesn't created a type of monopoly or duopoly. Its simple, Don't let the big companies come in and buy all the spectrum so that other companys cannot enter that market. P.S. I worked for U.S. Cellular fo...

Again...towers being built does not make them active. It can take 1-3 years to have everything fully functional and the stores won't be open until there's a service to sell in the area. As of this moment in time, OKC is still listed as "extended network" and not as "digital coverage". And as I posted originally, it is hard to give you an exact date when the towers will be switched on. Unlike some other carriers, Verizon won't just flip the switch and fix things as they go...they will make sure it works before giving the go ahead. There is probably no one on here or at Customer Service that can provide you an exact date so relax. I'm sure there will also be plenty of fanfare in the area when it comes time for the launch since there was ...
