The PR said " Verizon Wireless today announced that it will provide customers the option to use, on its nationwide wireless network, wireless devices, software and applications not offered by the company. Verizon Wireless plans to have this new choice available to customers throughout the country by the end of 2008."

Well...as the press release stated..."by the end of 2008." This is only the middle of 08. They have already had the conference for generalizing the design platforms and explained the approval process. It is still on schedule for end of 08...so you've got 6 months to go.

Dream on... I will bet Verizon will charge a "premium" for the "freedom" and severely reduced choices and flexibility.

If such a small number of people care about this stuff as many Verizon Kool-Aid drinkers beliwvw why would Verizon be making this radical change to their business model?

Perhaps those growing up using Daddy's phone company are liking the phones Johnny is using who;s family just night be using a GSM carrier.

Question for AvgJoe: Isn't that pretty much how GSM carriers treat unbranded devices? ...

Just watch- this is going to be a LOT more reasonable than the pie-in-the-sky AvgJoe likes to scoff about.

I am fully aware I will not get "phone support" from ATT. That's a given. I don't need it. No one at ATT or Verizon knows more about my phone than I. If I had issues getting it to work on the network ATT WOULD be there to keep a customer using a phone ANY phone on their network and paying them for the privilege. But Nokia alrea

Expect it to happen Fourth Quarter 2008. The technical standards still haven't been finalized. The implications of allowing open devices on the CDMA network are a monstrosity from a technological standpoint. I put this together a few months ago on the same topic:
