I've moved - can I port my number if I buy new phone in old city?

I moved from Boston to Birmingham AL, and also managed to port from Verizon to Sprint just before I moved.

Well, it's a year later, and I would really like to keep my number.

And frankly, I really miss Verizon's network and service.

But I was told at the local Birmingham Verizon store that they couldn't port me back, because they can't port 617 numbers.

They said they thought I might be able to port back via the 800 number, but I'm skeptical. Besides, theren't aren't many deals to be had calling Verizon for a new phone.

My question - I'll be back in Boston on business soon. Do you think I could port my 617 number back from Sprint to Verizon, if I purchase my new phone in Boston, from an area code 617 Verizon Wireless retailer?...

Blargh. Loaded question.

Yes. You can port your number when in the Mass area. Why? Cause it is a NorthEast area code. You can have the bill set up to be billed to your new Birmington, AL address. That will not be an issue. I've done Mass set ups and bills sent to other addresses out of state.

Port-I's cannot be done from region to region. Example: California to Mass.. Or in your case Mass to Alabama.

I won't lie about this though.. VZW service is pretty darn good but it IS a little weak in Alabama. Birmington, Pelham and that area will NOT be a problem. It may be a little difficult when you head further southwest.

Other than that I forsee no issues.

I appreciate the heads up. We'll see. Verizon may or may not make sense in that case.

Because iSync (Mac) is a big deal to me, one of the Bluetooth Cingular phones might end up making more sense.

But at least I know that VZW is an option I can consider.

Staying w/ Sprint could be an option too, but they won't put credit towards a new phone for another six months.

Number portability is LOCAL number portability. You can't take it from one city, state, etc to another. If your number is 555.123.4567 you can't port it to area code 888. It has to stay local.

I am aware of that.

But I've been told several times the same thing that GWFOX is saying.

In essence, if I'm in a local store with a local number, they can accomodate me even if my billing address is cross-country.

Think of all the snowbirds who live in Florida six months of the year, for example.

What I would do is port the number to a Verizon phone while in Boston and have the billing sent to a local Boston address for a month or so then do a change of address to your Alabama residence.

I don't imgine Verizon will (or even can legally) port a "617" number into a new phone and then assign an Alabama mailing address to the account.

The reps in AL are correct. They can't port in a 617 number. The reason why they referred you to the 800 number is because Telesales will setup your account as a Boston account and ship you out the phone to whatever address you want.

It is best to purhcase/port the number while in Boston.
