Mobile virus infects Lexus cars
by David Quainton

Lexus cars may be vulnerable to viruses that infect them via mobile phones. Landcruiser 100 models LX470 and LS430 have been discovered with infected operating systems that transfer within a range of 15 feet.

"If infected mobile devices are scary, just thinking about an infected onboard computer..," said Eugene Kaspersky, head of anti-virus research at Russian firm Kaspersky. "We do know that car manufacturers are integrating existing operating systems into their onboard computers (take the Fiat and Microsoft deal, for instance)."

It is understood the virus could affect the navigation system of the Lexus models, it transfers onto them via a Bluetooth mobile phone connection. It is s...

Sounds like Lexus was stupid enough to put a Windows OS in it's models. Everybody writes viruses for Windows.

Lexus wanted to allow you to be able to synch their car with your Outlook calendar. I had a demo this summer.

Sounds like it should be easily resolvable programatically. Lexus should be smart enough to work around the theoretical vulnerabilities.

Everything attached to a Microsoft product needs protection, ESPECIALLY Verizon's (Audiovox) PPC-6600 which runs on the Windows Mobile for Pocket PCs 2003 Second Edition version.

Too bad it has crippled Bluetooth too.

No, you would hope so, but it is true. Object Push Profile (OPP) was enabled, but Object Exchange Profile (OBEX) was not, in Verizon's (Audiovox) PPC-6600.

Hey, the idea of anything that flies at 35K feet and has the aerodynamic capabilities of a cinder block running on a Microsoft product gives me the willies! I'll drive, thanks--in my old style vehicles that don't have much in the way of computers on board at all... I'm pretty technologically savvy, but I definitely pick and choose where to upgrade to something fancier, and I prefer my vehicles mechanical...

Give me a plane with propellers and solid state electronics running it and I'm kosher.

Preach on, brothah! If you're up in the air and things go amiss, it's best to have everything possible helping you to get down slooooowly! I like gyroplanes, myself, those are pretty cool and there are some fairly inexpensive kits available... 😎

Ah, the Autobahn...a marvel of human determination. Do you know they hardly have accidents on that thing? That's because people are civil over there.

Not to mention the very high cost of getting a license in the first place, and the astoundingly high fines for failure to yield (a major cause of freeway accidents) and the draconian penalties involving losing your license for bad driving and accidents on your record. Civility through intimidation, right on! 😁

Sounds like the auto manufacturers need to switch to a REAL OS like Linux, UNIX, or Mac OS. Personally I'd opt for Mac OS...VW already did the promo where you got a free Ipod when you bought a New Beetle. Think how sweet it would be to be able to integrate your bluetooth phone with the sound system, and use the bluetooth enhancement for the Ipod to beam your music to the sound system! Not to mention syncing your powerbook with the car for navigation and even contacts and a to do list! Those OSes are nearly virus proof also!
