Verizon reps...my bf has the original Env. He opened his account with this phone In april of last year, 2007. He loves the phone…the form, the functionality, the looks-everything. The only thing he doesn’t like is that the phone shuts off while he is using applications-mainly the web, IM, and GIN services. He has taken the phone In many times to a direct VZW store and had the software version flashed, had the tech people take it apart look at it, and finally, on April 25 of this year, they replaced it (I think this is called an FRU?) in the store with a brand new EnV. There was no water damage or anything (obviously, or I don’t think they would have replaced it). But they made him keep his old battery off the original phone. ...

A lot of apps downloaded through get it now have upgraded versions themselves, such as IM. Check for upgrades on all of the apps you downloaded. This could help. I personally know that IM has updated twice since I had my enV. VZTones Deluxe has an update as well.
Just something to consider..

Thank you for your quick response! Yes, we've Dl'ed all the upgrades. in fact, he has a newer version of the IM app than I do on the EnV2 (it came with one version installed, and I've tried to upgrade from within the app to no avail...it keeps telling my that my IM client is up to date, when I know for a fact that it is not. Cuz he has a higher version, lol!). Since we've Dl'ed all the new versions, it shuts off more... ☹️

Some apps won't update from within the app itself. Try going into the get it now menu, mobile IM, and click on options. It might work that way.
I don't know what the multifru option is for the enV. I'll have to look it up.
Other than that, your boyfriend might have just caught some bad luck because the enV ROCKS! 😉
...
Haha, so true! that's why he's getting really frustrated, cuz he LOVES the phone and HATES mine! he wants the EnV to work, cuz he really does not want to change to the EnV2...Hopefully his bad luck will pass, and if they have to FRU it again, it'll work, and that'll be the end! 😎
...
I hope so too. I don't care for the enV2. Decreased front screen functionality won't work for me. I actually used the front screen more than the main screen on my enV

I have heard there is a patch for the problem with the phone shutting off... a direct verizon store should be able to do that for you
I also had the same problem with my env and I attributed to the way the batter sits in the phone.. if the batter loses connection then there's no power and the phone shuts off.. but thats just my opinion with no facts behind it.
As for the FRU exchanges they may offer you so different replacement options after 3 times... a CSR would know this process better than I.
Another question is.. is he the primary line on the account? You may want to call Verizon and see if he is eligible for an annual upgrade. This way he would pay a reduced cost on a phone of his choice.. its just at one year pricing i bele...

Yep...we've had the patch installed...or firmware upgrade...or whatever. If the new battery doesn't fix it, then we'll have them exchange the phone again. Then if that doesn't fix it, we'll see what they're willing to do as far as changing out the phone for a completely different model. We talked to the rep about the annual upgrade, as he was eligible for that. the EnV2 was $219.99 at the 1 year price. while we're willing to pay something (we were thinking about $100 or so), over $200 is a bit much, especially since the problem is with the phone...

i understand the frustration.. i actually FRU'd my EnV a got a replacement that had the charge port fall right out of it... but i just sent it back and got another one.
You paid for an EnV.. it comes with a warranty which is why verizon is totally willing to replace it as neccisary, for the same phone... at some point, given you continue to have issues, they'll offer you alternative options.
