Verizon must be going crazy. First the V710, then the Audiovox 6600, and now, apparently their "new flagship CDMA phone for North America", the LG 8000 has similar restrictions.

I belive that Verizon is placing these kind of restrictions on data transfer because of some sort of deal that they have with the company that owns BREW. Whatever the details of that deal may be, it is preventing Verizon from allowing other forms of data transfer rather than through BREW. If this is the case, I say Verizon should dump BREW.
Then why did Verizon restrict the Bluetooth on the (Audiovox) PPC-6600.
If the specs here are right, that unit does not have BREW:

It's going to be quite difficult for Verizon to dump brew.
Verizon uses cdma which is owned by qualcomm.
CDMA phones use brew which is owned by qualcomm.
Verizon has a deal with brew that says no free data transfer on a device with brew.
You know, so qualcomm can get that dollar.
Now we start to see why those wacky euros and asians wanted no par...

Interesting. That's exactly what Sprint has been doing for the last few years.
As for using the phone as a modem, you didn't expect unlimited EV-DO for your laptop for $15/month, did you? I hope not.
Although not allowing modem capability at all does seem pretty stupid. You'd think they would have figured out a way to selectively control and bill for such usage, so that if you want to use EV-DO with your laptop through your phone, you could, as long as you have the correct ($80/month) data plan.
If true, that is bad news that they couldn't figure that out.
