Ok so I live in Sioux Falls SD. I recently went to a friends cabin in Brainerd MN (2 hours NW of the twin cities or about an hour north of St cloud). While driving up there I had extended mostly thru MN. I had EVDO in ST Cloud area. I got all excited... but then 10 miles from their house I went to extended. I had 1-0 bars. I was po! Now why is it taking so loooong for unicel to turn into verizon? Cant they just flip a switch and say ok this tower is now verizon. The ppl I went to visit had unicel and had great service in their home... about 3-4 bars (on a 1-4 bar scale). and yes I did do a *228 option 2 prl update before leaving when I was still in my local vzw coverage.

Also... what is going to happen to the gsm unicel we have here in S...

The Unicel network in Minnesota is poorly built out. Alltel acquired it with the Western Wireless buyout. Then Alltel boughtout Midwest Wireless, and decided to divest the network that was Western Wireless for the Midwest Wireless network, which was built out better.

Now unless they're actually building out the former Western Wireless network more, then they might be waiting for the Alltel buyout to be completed, and for areas that they get to choose, then they'll likely keep the Alltel network. As for areas where Unicel is GSM, and Alltel is CDMA in overlap markets (GSM for roaming purposes), then Unicel's network will likely be divested, as Verizon will want to integrate an existing CDMA network than a GSM network. I don't know if...

um verizon bought rural wireless corp which owns unicel... alltel doesnt have unicel. Western Wireless (cell one, which i used to have) was bought out by alltel. then later alltel bought midwest wireless. They never bought unicel... verizon did... so i dont get what alltel has to do with any of this!

There's some overlap where Alltel & Unicel serve. Most of Unicel's coverage is GSM (Minnesota is CDMA). In the case of Alltel acquiring Western Wireless, WW had the A side in southern Minnesota, while Midwest Wireless held the B side. When Alltel acquired Midwest Wireless, they had to divest 4 RSA's in southern Minnesota. Alltel had to choose which one, and they chose to divest the A side t...

Let me just clarify here for both of you... The Southern Minnesota market was a recent acquisition for Unicel. First of all, the area that he was talking about has nothing to do with that acquisition. Unicel has controlled the northern half of Minnesota forever, and we have excellent network up there. Second, we have put a lot of money into network in southern Minnesota since we acquired it, and coverage is vastly improved.
Verizon's acquisition of Unicel should happen very soon indeed, as we are now only waiting on the final FCC order, which we are hoping to see any time. That merger will almost certainly be complete long before the Alltel deal is done. While it is true that Verizon will have to divest again in all likelihood at that ...

Being CDMA, having one bar is going to give the enough clarity for a call (just make sure you keep your hands off the internal antenna to keep the call clearer).
Also, I made a trip to Brainerd last summer as well and noticed that I had coverage with my old Samsung A870 (with a gouge in the antenna giving me less-than-perfect signal) in both Brainerd and Baxter.
Keep up with your *228 roaming updates when you make trips to see if you can give yourself that extra boost!

It does take alot more than just throwing a switch and BAM welcome to Verizon. There is actually alot of network that needs to be redone and the billing is another big part. I know the areas that you are talking about and the best thing that I can honestly tell you, with out getting fired, is that just keep your fingers crossed for the next up coming months for the RCC deal to be completely done. You will like what you see in the areas that were RCC. Rev A everwhere? If you have a more specific question ask away. I hope this helped.

ok not to get you fired or anything but are you saying that it will be EVDO up there? like they will just extend it from st cloud? Sweetness if it it! Also what do you know about the GSM unicel in sioux falls SD? They only have a 32.99 unlimited local gsm unicel. what will become of that when the deal is done? I noticed they have closed the unicel stores but i still have a friend who has it

Well as far as I have heard the entire RCC area will be Rev A. I could be wrong on this though. I would assume that they will get rid of the GSM side of things considering that Verizon doesnt sell any type of GSM services in the US. They will more than likely keep the GSM network its self for roaming purposes though. If they are still on the old GSM plan I would assume that they will be given the option to switch to CDMA. Pretty much all of the Unicel stores are now closed. There will be Verizon coming soon though. If I hear anything else I will let ya know.
