I think AT&T is doing that to deliberately force smartphone sales to people who don't really want any PDA features at all. If you are an AT&T sub and want a full keyboard, you're basically forced into a higher end, more expensive handset that you may not need.

I suppose you could go unbranded and hook a T-mobile device up after it's unlocked, but it is a little odd that they are pushing their more casual texting customer base that way. More money for them, I guess.
