Email Option Confusion

I just upgraded my "wife's" phone to an ENV2, and am confused as to the email options - do I have the following assumptions correct?

$15/month = Mobile Web / VCAST PAK
Does this only provide access via Mobile Web Email?

$5/month = Mobile Email: This is a download. What advantage does this have over the mobile web email interface? From playing in the store it seemed more "friendly" than the mobile web email.

If I don't have the Mobile Web / VCAST Pak, then I'm gonna pay $1.99 MB when using Mobile Email? Does this add up very quickly?

She doesn't really "need" email on her phone, but it would be nice if not too expensive. I looked at SmartPhones (i.e. Centro, Blackberry), but couldn't really justify another $30 month - and sh...

We are talking about a hotmail account, so that will work for the web email. It's certainly not the best interface/display - as I said, I thought the mobile email was a little nicer to look at / user friendly - but also an additional charge ☹️

If you don't mind the relatively crumby mobile web interface, then stick with that. You can set Hotmail's Mobile Web page as a favorite in the Web 2.0 browser just by hitting the Options button and tapping "save as favorite" after you get into your inbox. Then all you have to do is open the browser, hit "9" for favorites, then press whichever hot-key is attached to your Hotmail favorite. Open phone, press 4 buttons in a row, and I'm at the top of my Hotmail box faster then I could get my wife to answer the phone if I called her.

Watch your MB usage using the #DATA, but since you're using the stripped down browser that completely ignores attachments and graphics in the file, you should spend less then $6/month, and likely just the minim...

Ah...so you're saying the Mobile Web / Vcast Pak at $15/month would be a waste for basic email? I'd be better off using Mobile Web at $1.99/GB?

I've got a free month of the mobile web/Vcast, so I'll play around, watch my download amount, and see what I think in a few weeks.

Or I obviously could spend an additional $5/month for the Mobile Email front end.....

And to think I knew what I was doing!

I gotta say "Web Surfing" is not a great experience on the ENV2. I guess if you had specific needs (i.e. stock reports, etc) and could go right to it, then maybe...

Yes, $15 Vcast is WAY overkill if email is your only reason for surfing. And yes "mobile Web" and "Internet" are not even close to the same thing. If you can't find some favorite sites with a mobile-optimized portal, you won't be happy with it.

Since you have the free month of V-Cast, go ahead and download the application for Mobile E-Mail...that way you won't be using your MB to download the application when you actually start using it.

i personally pay the extra $5 a month because I like having the alerts sent to me when I have new email and it is easy to use, I think going through mobile web is a hassle, so it just depends on how much she is going to use it. I say download it and try it out, you can always drop it and I doubt the $5 will break you

No! $5 will break me!
Seriously - I considered a "smartphone", but dind't think we could really justify the +$30 for the data/email plan.
If you're suggesting that I can get the email functionality for +$5/month +$5/month in data charges, then an extra $10 still sounds good compared to the $30. If I need the mobile web @ $15 plus another $5 = $20, well, now I'm getting closer to the +$30, in which case maybe I should just get her a Centro and a richer email and web experience!

if you just do the $5 a month plan you will be charged megabyte usage when sending and receiving emails if you opt out of vcast..Now the emails through this program will not give you pictures only text so I can't imagine it would rack up a ton of megabyte charges, the file size for text only emails should be small...but I guarantee nothing in that aspect
