Supertooth 3 & Phone Book Upload
I called Blueant and discussed a phone model they said should work "IF Verizon did not have any network restrictions". If they did, I was told to ask about the availability of a firmware upgrade that would allow the built-in bluetooth functionality to work.
Off to a Verizon store where I found the phone and was promptly told it was restricted and no firmware upgrades are available...why a cell company would restrict this function to impede total hands-free is nuts...but, it ...

So, the dilemna for me is Verizon works in my rural home...but is taking away built-in services.
I can't stand having to do the "work arounds", but these companies force it upon us.
I pretty much figured there was no hope, so off to AT&T website to see what they can do...fun is!
Thanks for the replies.
have fun with att's ****ty network if you go there. im sure making and receiving calls reliably without tons of dropped calls and other annoyances is not important as long as you can do your bluetooth phonebook backup
Um, I didn't say I was definitely going to change...just off to see what AT&T could do. The fact Verizon confirmed today they purposely choose to block vendor applications is somewhat perplexing, but it's their ball...my choice is to see if I want to play with their ball or not.
I had AT&T years ago and they were fine except for my immediate house...but new towers are in and I suspect they will be okay here although that is not critical.
The ST3 will be truly a useful hands-free option if I can upload the phone book...I am not looking for a sync, just for the built-in capabilities of the phone and the ST3 to not be blocked arbitrarily. Unfortunately, I know nobodies phone number anymore so when an incoming callers numb...

With VZW, they ARE NOT BUILT IN SERVICES. There is no hidden secret. These are know items, and are listed on our website about what our bluetooth supports.
I don't understand this complaint. Even though GM makes Cadallac and I by a Chevy, I should expect Cadallac features? VZW does not sell the products with the manufacturer's default software. No secret.
To you, that may be a minor inconvenience, but to the casual user who needs to comply with new state laws requiring hand-free devices, it is a pain in the butt.
I cannot just go out and buy any brand of BT car kit. I have to do hours of research to find one compatible with my crippled VZW XV6800.
Think of it this way. Ten manufacturers all sell a car that was built by Company X. One manufacturer sells that car, but they put a brick under the gas pedal so it only goes 30MPH while everyone else gets to go ...

I understand the complaint, but VZW is running a business to met the needs of the most people...plus are making a profit at it.
So don't consider the handset "crippled" because you buy it that way. You have all the choices in the world to go to a different carried that allows you to buy whatever handset you want.
Yes, **I** bought the phone knowing that **it is crippled** from the ***world-wide standard Bluetooth capability*** that it had when it left the
manufacturer. I did so because VZW has the best cellular service I have ever encountered. I also did so hoping that VZW would some day pull their heads out
of the sand and realize that certain features should not be crippled, as they are needed to make the phone truly usable, i.e., easy connection to a wired BT
car kit (by "wired" I mean one that is wired into the car radio) and the ability to have speaker-independent voice dial. Heck, my old E815 could do speaker-
independent voice dialing, but not my sh...

The mere fact that **native Bluetooth capabilities** have been **removed intentionally** means that the BT is indeed "crippled." Knowing about it does not mean that it is not crippled.
Knowingly buying a car from a dealer that removed the manufacturer's default V8 and put in a squirrel-cage does not mean that the car has not been crippled. Maybe now it gets 400MPG and is worth the purchase, but it is still crippled from its original manufacturer's specs.
In my case, the XV6800 has enough benefits over my old E815 to warrant the purchase, but I will always miss the capabilities I had on my OLD phone (voice dial in this case). As far as I know, VZW is the only one...

I've never finished a phone book transfer to see if it works, but it allows you to try.
I have successfully sent a ring tone to a Decoy with no issues.
No, there is no new version of firmware for the Motorola W755.
That's like getting mad that every camera phone doesn't have video capability.
My understanding is that higher-end VZW handsets- PDAs and smartphones- do not have BT restrictions on them. The reason probably has to do with their stranglehold on BREW applications. If the file transfer works for phonebook push, it would also have to permit pushing of copyrighted, high-profit GetItNow games and ringtones.
Palm/RIM/Windows devices do not use BREW applications, so there's no revenue loss potential from having file transfer enabled on those devices, I would think.
Not sure how accurate this is, but it makes a lot of sense from a business perspective.
If you want unrestricted BT, get a smartphone, not the cheap-*** Moto garbage.

I'm no genius here, but I think I have an answer.

BINGO.....
Verizon does not want school kids and those who don't need a PDA Dick and Jane swapping the fun stuff for free. Verizon wants their lunch money.
Exactly, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's an open market out there with lots of options. If you don't like what you've got, go somewhere else or do something different. There's no monopolies here.
Back in 2004, they blocked all BT transfers, including car kits and there was an uproar.
Today, you will find that the BT does alot more, and the "User Generated Content" like sounds, contacts and pictures move more freely.
The increasing size of MMC cards makes trading media so much easier that I think you will see more freedom coming along soon.
By the way my last 4 VZW phones had no issues transfering sounds/pictures/calender events/or phonebook most of the new phones let you do whatever on BT, they still block transfering ringtones but you can BT them to your my sounds folder and MMS them to yourself. Now some of the lower end BT phones don't have these profiles but any of the newer higher end phones support many profiles
