In a nutshell the answer to your first question would have to be no. While a dual band digital or tri-mode CDMA phone could technically be programmed to run on Verizons network, that is much easier said then done. And even if you went through the process of programming the phone you'd still have to talk a rep into activating it into the billing system.
Although Verizon's data plans certaintly aren't by any means cheap, consider the service that you are getting for your $45 a month. You get unlimited internet (not mobile web) access. I appreciate the fact that they give you this great internet, but I still don't feel it's worth the money to me. Maybe if my job included lots of travel (I have free global dialup though), or if at least this service were available when I travel to other contries...
I really hope the price comes down when my contract runs out or at the very least they give other unlimited data plans for those that would use this feature maybe several times a year versus several times a day or week (and I don't mean the 5mb/month plan).
Does anyone else feel the same way?

I may follow suit if the pricing doesn’t change. Two of my friends already switched to T-Mobile from Verizon because of this. I would have done it when they did, but back then I cared about using a phone for a phone and nothing else.
If Verizon just keeps trying to make a quick buck versus keeping customers for the long haul their churn will likely go up/customer base diminish. I was reading some reviews of Verizon phones that had limited bluetooth functionality and didn't allow you to transfer pictures onto your PC without using their online service......
