Newbie questions... (phone/service related).

I'm a newbie here, but I've been a Verizon customer for probably around 8 years now (back then it was Bell Atlantic Mobile in my area)... anyway, recently I started looking into phones such as the Samsung SCH-i600 and Kyocera 7135. One of my biggest needs is being to synchronize with my Outlook (at work), have my To Do list, etc. Just your basic Outlook/Exchange type stuff. As I started looking more into phones I also realized I'd like other features as well, such as bluetooth; finally there's such a thing as a 'universal' car kit since I can use any phone which supports bluetooth if I used a Bluetooth car kit.

My questions are as follows:
1) Am I able to buy and activate a 3rd party "unlocked" phone which may not be offered by Verizon, ...

Well Boris, I may be able to answer a few of your questions.

In a nutshell the answer to your first question would have to be no. While a dual band digital or tri-mode CDMA phone could technically be programmed to run on Verizons network, that is much easier said then done. And even if you went through the process of programming the phone you'd still have to talk a rep into activating it into the billing system.

Although Verizon's data plans certaintly aren't by any means cheap, consider the service that you are getting for your $45 a month. You get unlimited internet (not mobile web) access. This means that you can access via internet explorer or like browser, everything that you can access from your home pc. On top of that if you ge...

Thank you, I appreciate your input.

I appreciate the fact that they give you this great internet, but I still don't feel it's worth the money to me. Maybe if my job included lots of travel (I have free global dialup though), or if at least this service were available when I travel to other contries...

I really hope the price comes down when my contract runs out or at the very least they give other unlimited data plans for those that would use this feature maybe several times a year versus several times a day or week (and I don't mean the 5mb/month plan).

Does anyone else feel the same way?

Many people feel the same way... It's the reason when I bought the Treo 600 (pre-Treo 650 days) I ended up going with T-Mobile.

I may follow suit if the pricing doesn’t change. Two of my friends already switched to T-Mobile from Verizon because of this. I would have done it when they did, but back then I cared about using a phone for a phone and nothing else.

If Verizon just keeps trying to make a quick buck versus keeping customers for the long haul their churn will likely go up/customer base diminish. I was reading some reviews of Verizon phones that had limited bluetooth functionality and didn't allow you to transfer pictures onto your PC without using their online service......

There's no doubt in my mind that they're the best carrier in the U.S. (while many improvements always need to be made) but for my purposes, I chose T-Mobile as I use data alot and very few minutes a month (bout 400-500 including off-peak). T-Mobile coverage sucks, but where I live the signal is tolerable (though yes, my brother with VzW gets signal in some places I don't, and generally a better signal - don't even think he knows what a dropped call is, where as I drop calls with fair frequency and often the audio custs out in the middle of sentences). ::shrug:: to each his own I guess. Besides, I'm only in a 1 year contract with T-Mobile now, so might go back to VzW, or Cingular again. Doubtful that I'll ever try Sprint again, though I w...
