Thinking about switching to Verizon (long story...)

Ok here it is, a bit of a back story so that I can get some honest opinions.

I am sure many people have posted on this topic, but I need some serious advice. I have had AT&T for many years and I loved the service, etc. etc. However, I live in a small population area and at the time AT&T were the only thing in town (literally). I have the iPhone 3G and I have other phones as well but the service here is just horrible. We register reception, but calls drop constantly and I do not want to bad mouth the company because I know they do what they think is best about coverage. The thing that gets me is that I want something that WORKS. Verizon gets decent reception here as my inlaws were here yesterday and they could call out. I was on a call wi...

Not trying to be a jerk here....

But what exactly is your question? And is money an issue, because you mentioned your wifes layoff twice.

Also, where exactly do you live in the U.S.?

Sorry I went on a huge rant and my purpose didn't come out like I realized. I live in ky and call quality is an issue and verizon works here and I am considering switching. Just looking for some advice since I have never had anyone but AT&T.

advice on what though????

If verizon works better, then go for it. They have a 30 day test drive so you can sample the service.

ATT is pretty much garbage, I would run, not walk, to get away from them.

no bother...I just want to get a clear understanding of what you are looking for so I can provide some good tips.

My advice would be to go into your nearest verizon corporate store and tell them your situation. Let them know you want to try out the service and then go from there.

is there a phone similar to the iPhone 3G? Since 3g will never come to my area, what are the speeds of vzw EV-DO? According to coverage map we have it.

Im not sure on the exact download and upload speeds of verizons evdo, but I would be willing to bet that it is waaaaay faster than att. I have seen the numbers, I just dont remember them off of the top of my head.

The LG dare is the closest thing to an iphone. But Im more a blackberry fan personally.

hmmm... I will have to try it out, I didn't know they had a 30 day policy for a return. Before I port my numbers over, I may just grab 1 phone and see how it works at the house...Thanks for the help. Other than the LG Dare, what else? Should I wait for the Storm?

I am glad that you came to this forum and asked a very fair and honest question. Yes, Verizon has a 30 day trial period for new service.

As far as what phone you may want to try, here is my answer. I have had the LG Voyager for 7 months now. I like it for the full html browsing, and its touch screen. It opens up to reveal a nice size qwerty keyboard. I like to text a lot, and I find the size and placement of the keys just right. My 4 yr old daughter likes my phone too since she can access on Vcast her Dora and SpongeBob videos when she is bored.

It gets good reception compared to my other verizon phones that my wife and I have owned over the last 7+ yrs with Verizon.

The only slight disappointment with it is the the previous p...

Verizon is an awesome company to go with. Not only do you get to test drive there network, but with there 30 day return policy they also will pay for the calls you have made if you port your number back out to a different carrier. The reason why they ahev such good coverage is because they are always investing money back into the network for great call quailty. I've been a customer for about 5 years now. I love the service and love the phones. I carry the blackberry curve for work and the dare as my personal

The Storm won't be out for another month and a half...November 1st is the suspected release date. So, if you can wait a little longer for the Storm, I would suggest that you do. The Dare is a cool little phone, my husband has one and it has really cool features such as video recording and playing videos back in slow motion. So, it's a pretty solid phone but it doesn't stack up to the iPhone when it comes to web browsing or email. But you can always try it out and if you don't like it return it and get a BB.

AT&T is def not garbage in KY. AT&T has more coverage in KY and VZ does, I've lived here all my life.

Where exactly in KY do you live silentbob85?

att may have coverage but their voice quality is typically pretty horrendous no matter where you are in the country.

And you need to reply to the other person if you want to make sure they get your message

Not horrendous for me. I have had AT&T since it was Bellsouth Mobility. Ive also used other carriers as well and will admit hands down AT&T is king in KY in terms of coverage and voice quality, so will most other people in KY. Sorry but your stereotype doesnt apply here...

I live in western ky in a small town. The reception isn't horrible with AT&T, but I can pay for something that doesn't work well at my home. I am not bad mouthing at&t at all because most of my fmaily has it. Edge doesn't even work here and dropped calls are more frequent. My wife got the new chocolate and it's pretty cool. I'm waiting to try the dare. We will see how it goes, oddly enough we have 3g here via verizon.

Your going to dump a iPhone for the LG Dare? Your kidding right? I've used both and the LG's are toys.
I'm sure ATT has already done this but if not make sure you're SIM card is a new 3G one. Also try a Motorola brand phone with ATT they seem to be really good at pulling in a signal.

Well, the iPhone doesn't do me much good when I can't use it to its complete potential. Don't get me wrong, I love the iPhone, but if it makes a difference on whether or not I can reach my wife or vice versa at any moment I have to consider my options. Also, on the map tool I show no reception and very little 100 yards away from my house. On good days, the iPhone works, but if the wind blows it takes my calls with it. All iPhones come with the new 3G Sim and I have replaced it twice.

My wife is trying the new chocolate right now and she seems to like it. I dunno what we will end up doing, but I also have an iPhone that work lets me use, so best of both worlds? ;)

Well dare I drop the Sprint word. I know, I know. There going down the drain faster than a bottle of Drain-o. But they've just released a HTC phone the 'touch diamond' that's a pretty intense smartphone. Sprint also has 3G coverage and roams on Verizon's network, so just has good coverage as VZW.
I personally (in my experience only) think ATT and Sprint offer the best voice quality and I actually dumped ATT for Sprint cause ATT as good as they are really are kind of expensive. I do still use them fore wireless broadband. But as far as cell phone I went with Sprint because of my past experience with them and I liked the new phones there coming out with, plus I kind of like the under dog.
You said you're wifes out of work. What about you? Yo...

I blame the iPhone more than at&t. That phone is notorious for dropped calls.
