I'm self employed and primarily need a new PHONE - but also want the capability of checking email two or three times a day while I'm out of my office. I probably would not need to send many emails (that could wait till I'm home and on my computer) but I use email for my work and want the security of knowing I can check to make sure nothing urgent has come in that I need to get on immediately.
Are there any realistic choices (DARE maybe?) other than a smartphone like BlackBerry/Treo? If it's got to be a smartphone I might either jump to AT & T for a iPhone (even though it would cost me since I have everyone in the family on Verizon now) or possibly wait for the new Storm.
Thanks to any who can help advise

the iphone with att's weak 3G coverage is a joke. they have already had 4 software updates to fix a miriad of issues and the phone has only been out since july.
I would suggest trying the blackberry. I use a curve now, and its a great device. My mom has iphone and a blackberry for work. She said if she had to choose one she would keep the berry.
Also, verizon might be getting the iphone sometime in 2009. This is just a rumor, but who knows.

For five bucks a mo. you can have e mail access on your phone. You get a free txt saying you have a new email and I believe it will say who it's from then just follow the prompt to open. It's not a full service where you can open attachments but it's only five bucks. If not go Black Berry

Thanks - what's the service called so I can ask Verizon about getting it.

It's called Mobile Email. It's not a free text message though. From what I read (I will double check this when I get to work), but I thought the text message takes out of your allowance. It uses airtime (if on America's Choice) or megabyte (if on Nationwide) charges depending on your price plan.
Its available thru Get It Now as a download, not something that Customer Service will be able to add on. You go into GIN and under Get New or Get going under the following categories: Browse and Download, E-mail you will find Mobile Email.

Hi, ok so for the $5 e-mail client, you can get that in get it now,it's just called mobile e-mail(you'll see the price before).it's pretty good, gives you an alert when it finds you have a new e-mail(only checks every 30 mins).if you need more up to date, well blackberry is the way to go.and you had said you thought about i-phone (not bashing here) it would be the same monthly for the data on a blackberry...the way i think of it,it's a buck a day. hope that helps.

A couple other posts have mentioned the Mobile Email application available through "Get It Now," however, most newer phones include this application in the "Messaging" menu anyway.
Keep in mind that it's more than $5/mo. The application is $5, and transferring the e-mail to your phone will cost you more. Assuming you get something like a Dare or Voyager, you will have to change to the Nationwide plan which will charge you an additional $1.99/MB billed in MB increments.
Assuming your e-mails are each 10kB in size, and when you check three times each week day you're receiving two of these e-mails, you would be under a megabyte by the end of the month - meaning, you'll pay $1.99 plus the $5 for the program. And as daylily21 mentioned, ...
