What's with the size of phones now?

When cell phones first started getting carried by the common person (early 90's) they were still pretty big. Not quite the freaking huge bricks of the 80's, but still big. Then with the advent of digital phones, they started getting smaller. Most people agreed that smaller and lighter is better. It's just easier to carry in a pocket.

But now it seems like many of the new phones are getting big and bulky again. I really like the new Moto Krave, but it's pretty big to carry in a pocket (at least compared to my current phone). I guess it's because everyone wants big screens and full qwerty keybords. Those things are nice, but I'd prefer a smaller over-all size to stick in my pocket. Anyone else feel this way, or it it just me?

True, but phones back then were basically phones. They're so much more than that now, aside from the keyboards and what-not. Their functions, especially multimedia, dictate larger screens.

Plus, I've noticed that a large segment of wireless consumers complain more and more about not being able to see the screen on their phones.

I just think it's kinda funny. We finally improved the technology to the point where you can have a nice small phone actually fit in your pocket, but now we're back to people walking around with big holsters and cases strapped to their sides. I love all the "goodies" too, but I want a phone that's easy to carry.

Not me. I just got the Blitz. It's a little square but I love the full keyboard and it still closes to a small enough size...but I can SEE the screen without squinting

I guess there are trade-offs. I need to think about what's important to me and how I use a phone. I don't do mobil web and I text very little. My phone is primarily a phone. I might have to give this some thought before I jump at a cool new gadget-packed phone. The eye candy is nice, but if I rarely use that stuff and I carry the phone in my pocket, maybe I just want a smaller model. I don't know.

it sounds like you need a basic to mid level phone, in which case there are plenty to chose from. Heck, theres about 5 diff razr variants that verizon carries and those are all pretty reasonably priced.

But like others have said, phones today are so much more capable and sometimes that requires more space.

That's probably right. The problem is, I'm a gadget junkie. 😕
I usually keep my phones for the full two years and I already know that if I don't get one that is cool enough, I'll be bored with it quickly. I want the cool stuff, I just don't want a big phone. Yeah, I know...I'm asking a lot.

Matt--

While you might be a gadget junkie...do you really think you are a phone junkie? If all your doing is making calls and maybe the occasional text, I would go with a phone that will be durable and last you the full two years.

Did you look at the Casio Gzone Boulder? Its a great looking found and can take some abuse. If I wasnt in love with blackberry, I would def have a ruggedized phone. Theyre pretty slick.

Chris,
Thanks for the suggestion. I guess it does make more practical sense for me to just get a good basic phone. I just don't want to be bored with it and have phone envy half way through my contract. The other problem is texting. Like I said, I don't do much of it. Because of that, when I DO send a text I am pathetically slow at it if I have to use a regular dial pad. I wouldn't mind getting a qwerty keyboard to help, but now we're back to larger phones. 😕

yeah I feel ya on the qwerty, once you go qwerty--you wont go back!!

The envy2 is a good option and is not terribly big for a qwerty phone. I believe it has also gotten pretty good reviews on this site.

Thats the phone I had all picked out for myself before I saw the Moto Krave. The Krave has a higher coolness factor but I believe it's a little bigger. Oh well. I'll probably change my mind times before I actually pick one. 😛

The Motorola Vu30 is a very small phone that's fairly well loaded with features. It's nice to see a phone that makes full use of its size.

The screen is still 2.2 inches which is plenty for most users, the keypad buttons look different but give great feedback, and are work well for big fingers. It may not have the qwerty keyboard, or the fancy touch screen, but it functions very well as a a phone first.

For the touch fanatics, it does have touch buttons allowing one to take pictures and browse music without opening the phone.

The EnV2 is almost the same size as the razor. It just looks bigger because it doesn't have the tapered edges. It also sports a full qwerty keyboard.

To get much smaller than the EnV2 and still sport a ton of features, you would need a retractable screen or something.

With all the people having small phones and sticking them in their pocket...more and more are breaking, scratching, or flat out obliterating their phones.

Before they were small enough to fit in your pocket just about the only way to break a phone was to drop it...not people do not understand if you put the phone in your pocket it will experience everything you do...sitting..falling...etc....

😎 Excellent advice. But, most people shove it in their pockets anyway. Be it a suit, a coat, or jeans pocket. I like a size that fits my hand well.
