VZW phone upgrade

Hi All,

Newbie to this place and my first posting here. I have been with VZW for about 5 yrs now and am eligible for a phone upgrade now. I currently have "AMERICA'S CHOICE II 450 ANY UNLIM N&W AND UNLIM IN CALLING" plan. I want to add messaging to that and If I understood the sales rep correctly I believe my current plan gives me the ability to use Get It Now and possibly other web features and the usage is deducted from my minutes. (I might be wrong). Essentially I want to keep the current plan and add 250 text messages for 5 bucks. I might use the web features occasionally and may be some music.

Given that what phone is best suitable for my usage? I was thinking of BB Curve or Pearl (both coming for free after instant rebates) and ...

Not sure where you read that on this forum, but you cannot activate a BB without a data plan. There are several other PDAs than can be used without a data plan, but Blackberries require it.

Do you really need a BB? It looks like you barely text, and Im going to assume your not doing any mobile emailing. The BB data plan is 30 bucks, so make sure you will take advantage of it, if you are going to pay the extra dollars.

Sorry a typo. "now" should be "not" I meant to say I read on this forum that I can not upgrade to a BB without a data plan. But as i mentioned above the VZW website is allowing me to checkout an upgrade to a Curve. Is it the case that I will get the phone but will not be able to activate it If i go ahead and order it?

I dont really need a BB but the PDA features of a SmartPhone and hopefully adding on a cheaper data plan in future are the draw.

I also looked at the T-Mobile plan of 1000 anytime minutes + unlimited data and messaging for $59.99 but I think these prices are increasing as i select BB phones almost equaling verizon prices. Also I am not sure how Tmobile reliability is compared to Verizon which never gave me any problem so...

If verizon works well for you, then I would stick with them. T-mobile is okay, but no where near the coverage of verizon.

Im confused by your comment about "hopefully adding on a cheaper data plan in the future"...not sure what you meant there.

Bottomline, create a monthly budget for yourself and pick the phone/plan that you can be happy with that will fit within your budget.

The maximum I want to pay is about $55-60 for moderate usage of voice + messaging + data. So as the prices for data plans come down in future (say in 6 months) I can add it with out having to change the phone (that is if i can get a BB now with out getting a data plan).

So other than BB what other phones are recommended?

Thanks

you cannot activate a berry without a data plan. Not going to happen. So at the lowes voice plan plus data plan you already be at $70. And that doesnt include texts.

Right now, there arent a whole of phones that I really like...the Envy 2 is nice, moto has some decent offerings.

Just read the reviews on this site for some of the most recent verizon releases.

I wouldn't assume anything is going down in 6 months. There's no way to know for sure. In the 7 years I've worked for Verizon, I've seen data prices come down three times - one of those drops happened in the last year.

Also, I wouldn't assume that the $29.99 Email and Web for Blackberry feature isn't there. The online ordering system is very thorough, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn you somehow missed the $30 charge. Mind you, I'm not implying anything about you, but I know that the online system doesn't make everything completely obvious (plus, no one reads terms and conditions - I know I don't). Expect the Blackberry feature to be there.

You're looking at $39.99/mo plus $29.99/mo and possibly $5 for the text feature. That'...

If you do not wish to add a data plan...Blackberry is out. If you plan on keeping your America's Choice plan the Voyager is out. Any full HTML handset is goint to require a plan change to Nationwide pricing. I understand wanting to get the most expensive phone you can get for free with your New Every Two upgrade, but perhaps a Blackberry is not the right fit for you?

I would suggest going with the Chocolate 3, the Venus or the Envy2.

Chocolate 3 would also require a plan change. As well as the Dare and Krave off the top of my head.

I didn't realize that the Chocolate 3 would require a change to Nationwide. Wow! Does it have a a full HTML browser or is this just arbitrary. I am sure we will see the day where they are going to require all phone upgrades to require a change to Nationwide pricing.

I was shocked as well, the first time I ran in to it. I'm sure sure if it has the full HTML or not. I assumed because of requiring Nationwide that it did.

Except the Chocolate 3 will require a plan change to Nationwide.

It IS a good phone, though.

If you want to stay with your current price plan, then I would suggest that you get a phone instead of a blackberry. Try the env2, you can still keep your same price plan and also use the mobile web occassionally.
