Blackberry Storm & internet on my laptop

profsci

I plan to get the Storm ASAP. Currently I have a basic phone (unlimited usage plan) AND the Verizon Broadband Access (EVDO) Card (59.99 monthly service) so I can get internet anywhere on my laptop. Once I get the BB Storm, is there a more economical way to supply internet to my laptop than through the broadband access service? TIA, Al

Get the blackberry and add the 44.99 unlimited data plan and add the $15 broadband connect feature and use the BB as your modem va the aircard. Can't use the phone and be on the internet at same time though...

saves you the $29.99 a month extra to carry the blackberry (email/web plan).

Or use the BT to connect with your lap top for internet teathering(assuming you have BT on lap top). Works great for me. The air card will be faster though but teathering is very easy.

theoretically since the storm is Rev. A it should be pretty much as fast as an aircard, but real world speed may be a little slower.

Either way it goes, you will still be paying 59.99 for internet service, whether you tether with the blackberry, or if you use the aircard. The only disadvantage is that when you use your blackberry to tether you will not be able to receive calls.

The other replies are correct, I just want to add one more thing. You're probably under contract right now on your $59.99 air card. You won't be able to cancel it without penalty until that contract is up. For now you're stuck.

It's cheaper to cancel the aircard and pay $175 or less than to pay $60 per month...unless he only has three months (or less)left on his contract. Just think about it though. You can't use your Blackberry for calls while it is tethered.

I wonder if the GSM side would pick up while the phone is on an EVDO data session, which should work in theory. That would be awesome. Extremely unlikely, yes, but awesome.

I'll have to try it when I get mine.

I don't believe the GSM portion will work in the US.

The Storm has 850/1900 GSM radios but you know it will be locked to U.S. carriers. Now, if you had the unlock code, I suppose you could roam off AT&T or T-Mobile unless you had an account with one of those carriers. That is going to be very interesting. If one had an unlocked Storm with an AT&T or T-Mobile plan and a $49.99 Broadband Connect plan with VZW, that would be a nice test.

All global phones thru VZW can be unlocked thru the global department.

Other than cancelling the PC card you can change the ESN and plan to a regular phone and put it on a basic plan and/or do an assumption of liability to let someone take over that line

Thanks for the input and thoughts. So, if I understand your ideas correctly, there is little if anything to be saved by dropping my aircard (EVDO card) and if I did, while I'm on the internet with my laptop, my phone would be limited or disabled completely. So, I'm best off staying with the 59.99 service + tbe blackberry service fees as long as I need to use the phone while I'm on the internet on my laptop. Does that about sum it up? Al
