Been waiting a long time...might wait some more.

I have been patiently waiting for my contract to expire with AT&T so I can switch back to Verizon. I only have about 3 weeks left and I'm all set to do it. The only thing is, with the economy in the dumper I'm not so sure that now is the right time to get locked down under a new contract. I work in health care so my job should be pretty secure but there's no way to know for sure. Now I'm sitting here thinking that it might make more sense to just stay put for a while with AT&T and my current phone. ☚ī¸ I really don't want to. I'd much rather be back with VZW and have a cool new phone. But if I were to loose my job, cell phones are a luxury that we could give up to save money. If I'm out of contract I can walk away at any time wi...

If you still have your old verizon phones, you should be able to activate them without a contract

Seriously? I think I still have them somewhere. So you think I can reactivate the phones and sign up to a calling plan with no contract? Hmmm.....I might have to look into that. Oh man, I can't imagine using a phone that I got for free back at the beginning of my Verizon contract 4 years ago! 😕

when your contract is up with at&t, you can switch to go to verizon and try it for 30 days and if you like it you can stay. Im currently with verizon so im sure you'll love them 😁

I already know I'll like Verizon. My wife has them now and I've been a Verizon customer in the past. That's not the issue. I just don't think (given our current economy and job market) that this is the best time to sign a new two-year contract. Like I said in my original post, if I stay with AT&T for now at least I'll be out of contract so I could drop them at any time with no penalty fees. I don't know, I'll probably still make the switch. It's just something I thought of.

If you are switching over for service only and there isn't any "savings" in terms of monthly costs then that's that.

However, if there is a monthly savings associated to it, then there is more to consider... Don't forget also that the ETF is variable if you sign an agreement. It's $5/month less for each line.

($175 ETF x # of lines) / (($5 x # of lines) + $SAVINGS) = Months to balance.

If you save $10/month with 2 lines you get...
350 / 20 = 17.5 months = 18 months to balance off the ETF. Before that there is cost involved, after that there is savings involved. Factor that in with your other reasons for wanting to switch.

Most of the plans are the same, but working in healthcare there should be discounts on a monthly plan (and u...

That's a lot of very useful information. Thanks! Yeah, I do get a discount through my employer with both At&T and Verizon. The Verizon plan will cost me a little more because I plan to add texting which we don't currently have. Really, this isn't so much about saving money. As long as I still have my job, all is well. I just keep seeing more and more people loosing their jobs every day. Several companies around here have either closed or had big lay-offs. Two guys that go to my church lost their jobs last week. It's just got me a little freaked out and I started to think that getting locked in to a new two-year contract might not be a great idea right now.

Don't live your life in fear Matt, the world has you by the balls if you do... if you loose your job you'll find a new one. Just get a new phone from verizon, and be confident that everything will work out.

I appreciate the sentament. But there is a difference between living in fear, and trying to use wisdom in making financial decisions. I'm not afraid. I just know that if I were to loose my job a cell phone is a luxury that I could give up. That's a lot easier to do if you're not under contract. But yeah, I do know what you mean and thanks.
