Does Cingular phone work on Verizon network?

I was wondering why Cingular phones can't work on the Verizon network since they seem to operate on the same frequency? I'd assume it would be simple switch (software..?). Does anyone know if this is possible? Of course, my motivation is the Treo 650, but I realize that if this were doable than so many others probably would have by now but since I didn't see anything out there regarding this I thought I'd ask.....

No, they don't. They also don't use the same frequency or technology. Verizon uses CDMA... the older Cingular was TDMA and newer phones are GSM. Not compatible at all.

Not really. The question pertains to Verizon Wireless. It was a rather simple question, with a quick answer. Seems pretty reasonable to me.
