Smart Phone Question

If the economy has such an impact on people. Why does it seem like every phone Verizon wants to put out these days is a Smart phone. These phones require people to spend more money that they dont have on this 30 dollar data package. You would think when money is tight there would be more affordable and mid range phones to choose from. There are several phones that Motorola are putting out this year that I was interested in. For example tha Calgary but sure enough it is another Smart phone. I cant afford the package nor have no need for a Smart phone. I like more higher end dumb phones. Right now I have the Voyager and looking for something along those lines. I have the connect plan and phones like this work best for this plan

Exactly in same boat, have two upgrades available but not willing to pay another $30 per line for data package that I or my son don't need or won't use. Looking forward to some good feedback.

Thanks.

Because verizon is BUSINESS, and right now the business is shifting towards smartphones. And how can you complain? Its the only way for verizon to increase their revenues. And in case you haven't noticed, verizon is one of the only cell carriers in the world to post a fourth quarter profit.

It can be frustrating, but for years, verizon was behind everyone in terms of smart phones. Now they are actually catching up to everyone else. There are plenty of "dumbphones" available that are full featured and reliable. If a blackberry or WM device is not for you there are plenty of options that should suit your needs.

Good luck in your search and dont expect a shift away from smart phones or devices that require some sort of data plan, ...

Nokia intrigue, LG Versa, etc are "dumbphones" that have some high end features.

The Dare, Voyager, and EnV2 are all great devices as well that don't require a data plan.

While the economy is tight for a lot of people, quite a few of them are still demanding that their phones do more, because it can save them money (pay 20 more a month on your phone bill, drop your landline, etc)

I agree, we (my family) have 2 Voyagers and 2 Dares on a connects plan. I would like to get a Blackberry, but I cannot receive my work e-mail (military) regardless of my plan, so I would get my Yahoo email and a better browser (which is something I do want) for $30 a month, probably times 4 for the rest of my family, that would put me over 3 bills easy. Oh well we will see if something comes out that I just have to have. thank you for your information.

Haha. I hear you. You'll fan a lot of fires commenting on the precious smartphones in this forum. And I agree Verizon is a business but their foresight (as with most corps) is stupid and dangerous in this volatile economy. I just bought a Palm Centro (while I could) so I could have some more features than the standard cell phones provide without paying $30 for internet and email on a tiny phone screen. I have pay-as-you-go data (after 2 wks I have yet to "go") but you can still block data completely on phones released before 11/17/08 because you have to be very careful with data on phones without the plan. (I figure the 1 or 2 x a yr I might use it divided by 12 is still cheaper than $30 x 12). Just me, I know. Just my two cents.

The thing is, I don't mind paying for the data when I use it (I rarely use it); I just find their increasing the mb prices radically so they can justify their then "cheaper" data plans to be insulting. And I love Verizon, I don't foresee switching at this point bc their service and coverage are superior. I've read every thread on here concerning data, I've heard all the pros and cons. It still doesn't sit well with me that they're taking the choice away from customers. I think it's bad business. And when people in this country get to the point of having to choose between paying for groceries and paying for a data plan, the groceries are going to win. The cell phone will stay. The frills will not. I hope I'm wrong about this, but I don't see ...
