VZW uses Vodafone for overseas roaming. As the BB Storm comes with a Vodafone SIM card.
I'm wondering could you just put a prepaid Vodafone SIM in and have it work without paying for one of VZW's international plans? 😕

No that would not work unfortunately. If you dont want to pay for the international use of your storm, check the country that you are going to see if they have prepaid phones.
