Analog Verizon v. Digital Cingular

For many years, my family and I have had problems with Cingular (and Bell South Mobility before it), such as frequently dropped calls, delayed notification of voice mail and missed calls, occasional unexplained echo when talking, and error in system connection messages. As a result, I have now switched the other 3 members of my family to Verizon (which those 3 love) and would like to switch my line as well. Unfortunately, I am the only family member who lives in a rural area where Verizon only offers analog coverage. The voice quality of analog is annoying, due to static, etc. I have been told by several Verizon reps that Verizon is in the process of placing digital transmitters on the analog towers in Southeast Kentucky since they have ...

Do you currently have a line with Cingular? If so, how long have you had that line? What phone are you using? You may be on the TDMA network in which case the capacity of towers would not be very high. This would explain the dropped calls and 'error in system connection' messages. Your troubles are surprising to me, because Kentucky is one of the states that nearly has full coverage with GSM. I'm assuming that your troubles are with TDMA, in which case, you might want to give Cingular GSM a try.

Hope this helps you out in some way.

I do know that the whole western half of kentucky now pretty much has digital coverage to due roaming agreements with Blue Grass Cellular. Verizon is adding new towers this year along I-75 in Kentucky. I believe that was the only area in Kentucky getting added coverage. I know in the Michigan/Indiana/Kentucky region most of the new towers are going to Michigan this year.

it took me over a year with high level snooping to determine approximately how when and ezxactly where VZW was going to install an antenna near me to address my low RF. I ended up having to talk with a major account representative (I am not a major account) who went out of his way for me, but it was not easy getting them on the phone VZW likes to think that the info is a national security issue and protect it as such.
