๐คญ Okay, I'll NEVER say that I'm "educated" in the world of cell phones. So, I need some help. I want to upgrade and I'm 99% sure that it's going to be the Dare w/email. I am choosing between that & the Voyager. Now, what can a "smart phone" do that the Dare cannot? My husband doesn't want to pay for a smart phone data plan, and I was wondering if I would be missing out on anything that I might need or just love having. ๐คจ
My husband is a cheapo if it isn't something HE wants. Can someone just give me some "basic" differences?
Thanks ๐

-Push email (having notices for when you get email as you get them. This is a lot faster than mobile email is).
-Email attachments. View them.
-Better web browsing. while the dare does have and HTML browser, a smart phones browser still is signifigantly better.
-Customizations. Windows Mobile and Blackberry are both multi-carrier platforms, so there are a ton of useful applications you can get on them that you can't get on dumbphones. Maybe he doesn't think he wants some of them, but there is a ton out there, such as the ability to read and edit word documents. Or streaming his favorite radio stations.
If you decide on a dumbphone, I highly suggest you check out the versa.
...
Also, the monthly price difference isn't going to be much. With a Dare, Voyager, or Versa you're looking at $5 for Mobile Email and you're also going to want VCast for $15. If you don't have VCast the Mobile Email will be using megabytes and add up rather quickly. You're looking at $20 extra there and only $29.99 for a PDA. With everything you get on a PDA it's crazy not to go that way for only $9.99 a month more.
...
So, a data plan only $29.99 more compared to $20.00. ๐ฒ Hmmm. See, I wasn't going to get Vcast, but the way you're putting it if I don't get that then I'll pay per megabyte/megabytes with the email. Well, that's something they didn't tell me in the store, either that or I didn't understand. ๐
I guess I'll show my husband this thread and get my smartphone. Sooooo, which smartphone is good?? Blackberry or other smartphone?
One more thing, can the main line be a smartphone w/data plan and add on lines be regular phone/plans?
...
Yes, the main line can be a smartphone and the others not. It's just a feature that's added. I personally like the Blackberry's. There are so many free applications for them. There is always the Storm, but if you don't want to dive in that deep then I suggest checking out the Pearl or Curve. Both great phones.
...
Thank you SO, SO much! You and Menno have been extremely helpful. I can't wait till next Thursday!! ๐คค
...
DONT GET THE PEARL!!! The curve or the storm are the only devices you should really be looking at as far as blackberries go. The pearl is at the end of its life cycle and about to be replaced.
If you decide that a blackberry is for you, I would consider waiting 2 months for the BB 9630 which should be out by June-ish.
Just my thoughts...good luck!
Chris
...
Thanks ๐ But I'm just itching to get my hands on a Blackberry now! And I was actually leaning toward the Curve. ..........maybe I can wait.....not sure ๐คจ
Thanks again!

Pay the few bucks extra. Uh, actually, no, it's not extra. My son has the Dare and the monthly VCast package, and his bill runs me another $17 ish in downloads over that $15 (plus there's insurance), so it costs MORE than the data plan for a smartphone. WE both wish we'd have gotten him the Storm. Our Verizon rep didn't do his job with us for sure...He loves the Dare though. I'm the one annoyed at how much it costs me every month...especially since my daughter has the Centro and it's cheaper!!

you may not like the data on the dare, but your son would have hated the storm, its a terrible phone... so the rep got you what you wanted, you just gotta pay more for it
...
That's good to hear. Thanks. I mean, he's 16 and didn't IMHO need a blackberry. But then again I don't think most people I see with them need them.
...
Now given GraGG's reply to me, I'm going to contradict myself and tell you to make sure you need a smartphone. Only because if you are not that tech savvy, you may get more phone than you will really use or understand. You could always try an older smartphone (released before 11/17/0๐ because it will get you into the world of smartphones, but if your husband really objects to the bill, or you find you're just not using it once the novelty wears off, you can always block the data and still keep your phone. Can't do that with the newer ones. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth.
...
Actually, I'm not really concerned about losing interest or not understanding it. If I do my research and read the book I'm sure I can learn all I need to know about the Blackberry world ๐ Besides, a friend of mine has the Curve, as a matter of fact, and she loves it. I will however give it some thought, I have till the 9th, so maybe I'll try out my friend's Curve & see how it goes.
Thanks for your 2 cents, you (& everyone else) has been VERY helpful.
