Rumor

resource1

I hope the rumor that the moron at VZW who turned down the iPhone is "no longer with the company" is accurate. I've seen reports that AT&T is working on a major upgrade of its 3G network to get ready for a massive (some say 10 fold) increase in iPhone data traffic likely because of the ability of the next gen iPhone to video conference.

I'm not an Apple fanboy but video conferencing using a cellphone is absolutely amazing from a coolness perspective -- this may turn all the new iPhone users into AT&T walking commercials making others want to buy one.

Its a shame that VZW couldn't have been the first company to introduce cell/video calling. Do we have anything on the way which could also video conference?

The first Iphone was extremely buggy, could not access a 3g network, and was from a company that never made a cellphone before.

On top of that, Apple refused to allow whatever company that picked it up subsidize the cost of the phone in any way, they could not protect it with their insurance, and they wanted a portion of the monthly subscriptions their phones brought in. (in addition to how many other stipulations).

That's a heck of a lot to require a carrier to swallow for a phone from a company that never made phones before, even if it was apple. Remember, it was one of the first devices to require a data package that wasn't geared for businesses (Verizon couldn't offer it as a "hip" business phone because it couldn't connect to BiS...

There's no single person who makes the decision to carry a phone. Perhaps a VP who would give the final go-ahead might, but there's a whole department of people involved in securing new models.

The big phones - Storm, iPhone type phones - might have more involvement on the VP/CEO level because it's such a big deal, but I'd venture to say that the VPs probably don't spend as much time working on the next phone models as whatever branch of marketing tackles this.

I've never heard this rumor, and I work in the company. I have friends in certain places that I can get information from. I hear the "iPhone for Verizon rumors" constantly, and I've been hearing them for years now. I think this rumor exists solely because people want to be a...

For wahat Apple demanded, I understand why VZW said no. However hindsight is 20/20. If they knew what it would have become in advance, they might have thought otherwise.

I've been in business. You make decisions, sometimes you mess up, you move forward, and you can't spend too much time second-guessing.
