A couple of questions regarding LTE

I read in this forum that Verizon will have its 4g LTE system up and running by the end of this year or early next year. If so, I have these questions:

1. When is Verizon likely to have LTE capable handsets, especially Blackberries and smart phones?

2. Except for streaming video and video conferencing, is LTE any real advantage over today's 3g capabilities? Will download speeds be significantly faster? It seems to me that one is not likely to be downloading large files to a phone where it is likely to make a significant difference.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I dont think the build out will be fully complete by 2010, but it has already begun and you might see a handset or 2 in 2010 (i seriously doubt anything will pop up in 2009).

Blackberry has said that there is a LTE Blackberry on their timeline.

And video streaming will most likely be faster and smoother than with 3G. It will also help people that use wireless access cards to get internet on their computers or laptops.

You have took at it like this...did going from dialup to cable internet make a differnce? Hell ya! and I'm sure LTE will allow us to do even more with our handsets.

Just like 3g was a computer card product for months and months before the first handsets, you can bet that 4g will follow a similar growth pattern. As for a quality improvement- the difference is vast. Look to see "minimum expectations" at over 5 Mbps and going as high as 15 Mbps in real world scenarios like web access while driving 60 MPH.

This may not outperform landline IP pipes in urban areas but in the 700 Mhz band the tech is totally feasible for deployment in Montana and West Virginia. The cell connections in those areas will outperform any wired or satellite connection available.
Also, because any voice traffic will be handled via VOIP encoding voice coverage will be superior on a LTE handset.

Very interesting. It appears, though, that availability is sufficiently into the future that it makes no sense to wait before upgrading from today's phones. Perhaps in two years this technology will be readily available?

Nah, it doesn't make sense not to upgrade now if you are eligible and your phone is beginning to wear out. So many variables can have an impact between now and sometime in 2011 when the LTE system may (or may not) be intact. All you have is the moment, anyway. Might as well go with what works for you now.
