what if you buy the phone at retail? it sucks if a carrier would stoop so low as to NOT sell a phone if a customer doesn't agree to pay for extra features that they don't need.
Trust me, from what I've seen these phones do, if you didn't have the data package, you'd be in the store or on the phone monthly fighting for a credit because you had data usage on your bill and you're 100% sure that you didn't use the Internet. The XV6900 and i760 were getting there, and I see people come in all the time wondering why they got billed for data when they didn't use the Internet. But anyone who's read my posts long enough knows I have no love for Palm. I'd take a semi-functional Windows-based phone that jacks up my bill every single month to the tune of about $100 extra every time than take a Palm.
But that's just me. It doesn't get on the Internet like a Windows device. It doesn't do much of anything, really, and that's probably why.
Again, just my opinion. The one I formed after practically every Windows based phone since the Samsung i700 (about a dozen) as well as using the Blackberry World Edition, Pearl, Curve, and now Storm. I've had a few Palms in there, too, for just about as long as I could stand it.

If you have the phone active on your line, you'll pay the required data feature. That's what they mean by required. Your only alternative is to not have the phone, or use it as a PDA without connecting it to your wireless account, which makes little sense.
