Omnia data features

Sales rep in store said that you can't get an Omnia without a data plan. Omnia has wi-fi, so does anyone know what happens if you can remove the data plan after activating? Can you still use the brower when connected to a local network?

Thanks for any info!

The sales rep was correct. Unfortunately you would not be able to remove the data feature after activating the phone. If you want a pda without the data feature, the only option would be the xv6900, palm centro, motorola q9c, treo 700wx if you can find them new.

what if you buy the phone at retail? it sucks if a carrier would stoop so low as to NOT sell a phone if a customer doesn't agree to pay for extra features that they don't need.

No matter how you purchase the phone, if at full retail, or at the 1 yr or 2 yr contract price, you will have to add the unlimited data feature. A lot of customers have been getting pda's without the data feature and racking up high bills and disputing the charges. Now it is a required feature unfortunately.

If you have the phone active on your line, you'll pay the required data feature. That's what they mean by required. Your only alternative is to not have the phone, or use it as a PDA without connecting it to your wireless account, which makes little sense.

Trust me, from what I've seen these phones do, if you didn't have the data package, you'd be in the store or on the phone monthly fighting for a credit because you had data usage on your bill and you're 100% sure that you didn't use the Internet. The XV6900 and i760 were getting there, and I see people come in all the time wondering why they got billed for data when they didn't use the Internet. Simply, the phone will go there without you having to click on it. That's part of it's ...

Never had this issue with my Centro, though. Ever. Or my daughter's. And we've had ours almost a year.

Yeah, the Centro doesn't seem to do it.

But anyone who's read my posts long enough knows I have no love for Palm. I'd take a semi-functional Windows-based phone that jacks up my bill every single month to the tune of about $100 extra every time than take a Palm.

But that's just me. It doesn't get on the Internet like a Windows device. It doesn't do much of anything, really, and that's probably why.

Again, just my opinion. The one I formed after practically every Windows based phone since the Samsung i700 (about a dozen) as well as using the Blackberry World Edition, Pearl, Curve, and now Storm. I've had a few Palms in there, too, for just about as long as I could stand it.

Again, just me here.

No, I agree with you 100%. My Centro has a full keypad, threaded texts, and a calendar I love. Calls are clear and never dropped. That's all I need. I don't need a smartphone. That's why I have the Palm. Most people would probably not be happy with it at all. But you and I have discussed before the problem with dumbphones not having actual, functioning calendars. So I'm stuck in Palmworld - although the Pre looks interesting I would NEVER switch to Sprint, and again, I don't need those features at all...

The phone simply cannot be activated without a data feature. It's automatically added by the system and cannot be removed. No option to remove it.
