Trimode or Dig Only
Currently on AT&T TDMA, off contract. TDMA has worked well for many years but Cingular GSM has very mixed results here now - Verizon custmers here seem satisfied - so probably moving to Verizon.
Home, office and leisure are adjacent to major interstate highway (TX IH35). When we travel to rural areas we use a calling card and landline to make calls and check voice mail.
Receiving my calls and/or immediate voice mail notification is MOST important to me. I don't need a full featured phone... I like long battery life and small size.

Try Verizon in their trial period while keeping your TDMA. If you like it, then port or cancel your TDMA service. Not porting right away is my highest recommendation.
I didn't realize it's possible to port at a later date - good idea!!!

I understand the value of analog for out going calls - but does it increase the possibility of delayed voice mail indicator when/if an analog tower/signal is stronger?

Yes - that's my understanding... which explains why some folks around me are frustrated with their delayed voice mail indicators - especially when they travel through analog areas.
One guy we know carries a national coverage pager as well as a cell phone just so he doesn't miss a call.

you can always check the vmail though.. If a call is missed then in about 3 minutes just call the vmail and check it. You will also have a studder tone when you place a call if there is a vmail left on the phone and you didn't check it. I would deffinitly suggest you get a trimode phone.. after looking at the coverage in tx you might as well. Check out the Lg vx6100 if you want a nice phone with camera and all that. Or if you want just a nice solid phone thats a basic flip the lg-vx3200. If you don't want a flip then check out the nokia 6015. It was one of the best rated phones as far as signal strength by the testing dept but I don't like nokia 😉

OK - studied the maps - areas where we spend 99% of our time are digital. There's lots of analog areas in Texas but we ain't goin' there anytime soon. It looks like the major interstate highways are covered with digital - same as Cingular.
