Trimode or Dig Only

Thanks for reading my post!

Currently on AT&T TDMA, off contract. TDMA has worked well for many years but Cingular GSM has very mixed results here now - Verizon custmers here seem satisfied - so probably moving to Verizon.

Home, office and leisure are adjacent to major interstate highway (TX IH35). When we travel to rural areas we use a calling card and landline to make calls and check voice mail.

Receiving my calls and/or immediate voice mail notification is MOST important to me. I don't need a full featured phone... I like long battery life and small size.

I've researched, read and reviewed... I can't find a conclusive answer. CSR's have given conflicting advice. Analog (trimode) has been recommended for more outgoing ca...

Trimode will be similar to what you are using. The Nokia 6015i has a crappy screen, but it's cheap. I did try two of them, but both were defective so I tried another carrier and handed back the phones. My brother on the other hand got one that works and loves it.

Try Verizon in their trial period while keeping your TDMA. If you like it, then port or cancel your TDMA service. Not porting right away is my highest recommendation.

I understand the value of analog for out going calls - but does it increase the possibility of delayed voice mail indicator when/if an analog tower/signal is stronger?

I didn't realize it's possible to port at a later date - good idea!!!

NO! If there is a digital signal available your phone will always choose that. The only time it will use the analog signal is if there is no digital at all. It's not going to hurt you in any way to have a tri-mode phone.

That's the type of definitive answer I need - THANKS... Now on to the phones - I guess since I live in TX (with plenty of analog areas) I may as well go with tri-mode... I read the reviews - 1 person's trash is another persons treasure - oh well, how hard can it be?!

Best wishes to all!

Not only will it delay...you may not get voicemail while in the analog area.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes - that's my understanding... which explains why some folks around me are frustrated with their delayed voice mail indicators - especially when they travel through analog areas.

One guy we know carries a national coverage pager as well as a cell phone just so he doesn't miss a call.

you can always check the vmail though.. If a call is missed then in about 3 minutes just call the vmail and check it. You will also have a studder tone when you place a call if there is a vmail left on the phone and you didn't check it. I would deffinitly suggest you get a trimode phone.. after looking at the coverage in tx you might as well. Check out the Lg vx6100 if you want a nice phone with camera and all that. Or if you want just a nice solid phone thats a basic flip the lg-vx3200. If you don't want a flip then check out the nokia 6015. It was one of the best rated phones as far as signal strength by the testing dept but I don't like nokia 😉

I'll vouch for the Nokias. They're tough, ...

If you to verizonwireless.com, click on "products" you should see the coverage locator. You can probably use that to determine the coverage in your area and if you'll need a tri-mode or digital only phone.

Thanks for the help.
OK - studied the maps - areas where we spend 99% of our time are digital. There's lots of analog areas in Texas but we ain't goin' there anytime soon. It looks like the major interstate highways are covered with digital - same as Cingular.

Oh, Verizon also has a 15 day return period to take a phone back for any reason. So if you do get a digital only phone, I would suggest driving around with it and trying it out just be sure.

It is generally a good Idea to have a tri-mode phone. All of Texas just went digital on the Americas Choice package with Verizon. It is just a good safety precaution. The whole I35 Corridor from D/FW to San Antonio has awesome coverage w/ digital, with the only real problem is going into Ft. Hood up near Killen that you might have any problems at all. Take it for what its worth.

They didn't go all digital. If you click on the coverage locator and then select americas choice plan after feb 21 you can see large pockets of analog still there. If you go off of the red map in the stores dark red does not mean all digital and light pink doesn't always mean analog.
