Verizon Contract/Post-Paid Phones to Be Activated for Prepaid Use?

Hi, I have a Verizon Wireless prepaid account/phone/number, and I seek to get a different and much better phone, but still to keep the same prepaid account/number. However, the Verizon phones that are available for strictly prepaid use are very limited and not very good. So, I am thinking of getting a non-prepaid phone from eBay and activating it for prepaid use. But I am not sure how feasible that is.

Therefore, I wonder if anyone here can advise me as to what non-prepaid Verizon phones can be used for prepaid use so that I can look for the right phone on eBay.

Thanks a lot!

What about LG Chocolate? I saw someone selling refurbished version for quite cheap on eBay, but the seller claims it is for post-paid accounts only.

Yeah, all you need to do to change the ESN number on your My Verizon or dial *228 option 3 on the new phone. There is no charge to do this.

The system locks out certain models from being used as a prepay. I wish there was a specific criteria I could point out to help you, but I'm not even sure what the rhyme or reason behind the choices are myself.

For instance, I know of a customer who had a Boulder on prepay. Customer care sent him a warranty replacement which was the second edition Boulder - almost the exact same phone, but with a different speaker - and the system would not allow the ESN to be activated on a prepay line.

I do know that the phones with basic features activate fine. I can assure you that no PDA/smartphone and no touch screen phone activates on prepay. No phone that requires a Nationwide-brand plan will activate (and that list gets longer each month)....

Thanks a lot, epik! That is very very helpful guide. Now I have a much better idea what to expect.

OK, so I actually do have a specific model in mind. What about LG Chocolate LG VX8500 or VX8550?

My target options can also be broadened to any phone with bluetooth and a camera with a resolution of at least 1 megapixel. Any recommendation and advice would be greatly appreciate.

Thank you so much, epik!

as epik said many of the new ones don't work, but some do. best way to know if its not gonna work, if it says its dashboard capable, push to talk, HTML browser, or as epik said pda/smartphone. all these should be in description of phone. other then that it will work.

p.s. 8500 and 8550 will work

Both Chocolate 1 and 2 will work fine. For a while we packaged Chocolate 2 as a prepay through Walmart and in our Circuit City stores.

Even today's basic prepays have Bluetooth, so that's pretty much going to be a given, but most of them will be sub-1MP cameras. Even still, your chances of getting a 1.3MP or higher usable for prepay are good.

Also, I think I meant to mention this before but didn't - if you're thinking prepay to avoid the contract, you can always do any phone on a non-contract post-pay plan. But if you're looking at prepay because of minimal use or a security deposit, never mind this part of my comment.
