Mifi as replacement modem for 'grandfathered' EVDO user??

Mobilusr

I have had an EVDO broadband card for a long time on VZW and am grandfathered in to the 'unlimited' data plan.

I am not under contract as my current device is over 2 years old.

Does anyone know if I can get a MIFI to replace the current card and maintain my current plan with it's unlimited status? When you get a new device do they make you agree to the current data bucket scheme? Is the Mifi treated the same as a replacement card or dongle??

Also - would appreciate any thoughts on using the EVDO vs other options.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Simply a guess here,

If you are out of contract Verizon has no obligation to keep you on a old plan.

I would expect that have to get a new plan.

I would guess this as well. For older voice plans verizon's pretty good at grandfathering old plans (but this really limits your phone price) But with something like an unlimited plan, I don't see them grandfathering it for something like a MiFi.

Haven't tried it on a MiFi. I know we've been able to sell regular cards without changing the plan, but I don't know if we've ever tried to put a MiFi on the older air card plans in our store.

Process the upgrade online. If you do it with a rep they doubtless will change the plan. If you go through the upgrade process online it will have to confirm the plan. If it changes cancel the order and keep the good thing that you have.

I logged on to my account @ VZW and selected to upgrade the number that has the EVDO card on it. The system said it qualified for a new every two upgrade in 03/2008. When I clicked to be shown equipment eligible for my plan it showed no items for selection. I think we have an idea how this goes down at the store.

Since my equipment is old (and slower then current equipment) they effectively will force me and others grandfathered off our unlimited pl...

If this is the case, even if you can get the mifi to work, it won't work well (much like trying to run a voyager on an old america's choice plan)

Grandfathered plans are there because it allows you to finish your contract without verizon changing the terms (avoiding people getting out of their contracts, lawsuits, etc). once your contract is up, verizon has no reason to keep you on that older plan. Yes, they make some devices backwards compatible to retain the business, but if you want the "latest and the greatest" you'll have to transition to a newer plan.
