Can someone tell me the reason why Verizon does not just buy-out US Cellular? They have been their rural roaming partner for a while now and I am sick and tired of traveling out into Maryland, especially the Cumberland and West Virginia area to do business and i am always stuck on the Extended Network once i cross the Mason-Dixon Line.

Maybe USC does not want to be brought out by Verizon. There has been rumors that USC and alltel will either merge. Alltel's corporate meeting, the higher ups stated that Alltel is not up for sale, and they will continue to buy up little markets until they become the 4th largest National carrier.

US Cellular is not for sale
...
US Cellular should be for sale, they don't have the service or coverage that verizon and cingular provide. I know people that are on USCC and they cant wait to switch to verizon, so they can use their phones almost everywhere. USCC is just going to lose out until they get smart and offer decent coverage. Look at USCC coverage map and that tells it all. A company the size of USCC that does not want to offer their customers decent coverage is sure to fail. Now days, people want to be able to use their phones at home and on the road, and USCC does not provide coverage if you are on the road..
I have talked to USCC reps and they will tell you that they can not compete with verizon, if they don't make the sale before the customer leaves t...

First of all, not every customer travels frequently. I help customers almost weekly who are paying way too much for nationwide service that they don't even use, they are just let sales reps convince them they need no roaming. However, if a customer does want nationwide service, then USCC is not for them. US Cellular has one of the absolute lowest churn rates in the industry so obviously they are doing something right. They are also one of the few carriers to offer blanket coverage-no little spots where you will be charged roaming. They offer large local areas and do not rely upon other carriers to make up their networks. Just because they are a regional carrier instead of nationwide does not mean that it's a bad company, it just fills ...

I was a US Cellular customer for 6 yrs. Traveled up and down the east coast and west coast, never once had a problem. I know one thing, no carrier will take there place in eastern north carolina. They absolutely have the best coverage and neither cingular or verizon can match there coverage there.

well, if verizon buys them, then you will still have the great coverage in those areas and get more...it's a win win situation for you, you will get more... 😁

Verizon has tried to buy them. After they failed to buy the entire company they tried unsuccessfully to only buy the Washington/Oregon/California markets.
The majority of USCC's stock is owned by one family (the family that started TDS) and they are'nt budging.
USCC is a bizarre little company. Their network is second to none, albeit behind the industry in data features, but their plans are strange and their marketing and customer service people are inconsistent at best. Altogether they do a remarkable job for the disadvantages they have in market presence.

for justpeachy,
you and I can agree on one thing for sure without a doubt, USCC does not have a plan for the traveler, which is their biggest downside. You do have a national plan, but, don't forget about the 50% rule, if that user uses over 50% of his minutes outside the home area, USCC can and will shut them down.
Check out pricing for the 2 companies
USCC:
advanced regional 1500 $100/month
3000 N/W minutes $4.95
Add sharetalk: $20/per line
total cost for 2 lines: $125
Verizon
Americas choice 1500 $99.99 includes 2 lines
shartalk for 3rd to 5th line $9.99/per line
N/W minutes No charge/ unlimited
total cost for 2 lines $99.99
with verizon, you get to use your minutes, including ...

i dont think verizon needs any more partners especially in the wireless industry. they are spending $5+ billion dollar on capex with most of that being for roaming. i just dont think it will be a good idea for verizon to be buying up everyone and also spending billions for spectrum. no reason to do so. plus they might want to get rid of vodaphone for 20-30 billion dollars with their stake in verizon wireless. yes verizon has money, but they also have debt. their wireline business is doing terrible and their wireless business is the best. again, they only own 55 percent of verizon wireless and they want to , in my opinion, to own vzw outright. plus wwca and alltel are merging together, and i think when verizon offers a bid for wwca/alltel i b...

Verizon can't buy US Cellular in a hostile takeover, since only 17% of US Cellular stock is publicly traded. 83% is owned by TDS, a landline carrier. TDS in turn is controlled primarily by one family. So, unless USCC wants to be bought, it ain't gonna happen.
As to being able to travel and have service, US Cellular customers roam on Verizon and on Sprint. If a USCC customer has a Regional or National Plan, they pay NO roaming charges.
So they get the benefit of Verizon's towers, where there are no USCC towers, and they get a better monthly price than Verizon offers in local areas and on Regional Plans (although not on National Plans - YET).

not regional plans, and you forget, Us Cellular restricts where you can use your phone, the N/w minutes, M2M minutes, and call me minutes are only used in the home area, and they have the 50% rule on the regional and national plans.
Check the prices on USCC regional, and Verizon Americas choice plans...you will see verizon is cheaper, and provides a bigger area of coverage as where you can use any of your minutes, anytime, M2M, Unlimited night and weekend, (USCC does not have unlimited N/W minutes).
Just one line pricing...
verizon $99.99/month= 2000 anytime minutes
unlimited N/w minutes, unlimited M2M
Grand Total=$99.99 plus tax
USCC REgional $100/month=1500 anytime minutes
Add $4.95 for ...
