#2. The Open Device Initiative is a joke (from a consumer standpoint). The ODI program certification standards basically allow for two types of devices: 2G only phones and machine-2-machine diagnostic tools like remote meter readers for power and water companies or GPS trackers going into ankle bracelets for felons on parole. If you don't believe me, go to their website and read all the certification documentation. I have.

Basically, the answer is yes, but they won't be called SIM cards.
I DO know that LTE will seamlessly handshake back and forth 1X data as well as with most current GSM data technologies, but would work entirely differently from standard voice technologies. This means a data connection should have no trouble flipping between old and new formats.
LTE for voice is a very strong possibility in the future, but given the extensive 1X network already in place - the bread and butter of the Verizon voice network - and the amount of handsets already in the field that work on that tried and true network, I don't believe it will be going away for many years.
