I have a question...
Is Verizon's 3G coverage map counting more than just EVDO Rev A? I know Verizon has a slower data network like AT&T's EDGE but I can't remember what it is called...
For comparison:

Differentiates between high speed (EVDO) and low speed (1xRTT)

The blue portion in this map is the only which we can say for certain is EV-DO Rev. A. This is NOT the map they are displaying in Verizon stores I have frequented in the past week and does not look like what I have seen on the commercials. Of course, technically Verizon's entire network is 3G but they really should only compare their Broadband coverage to AT&T's 3G. They would still win by a bunch and we would not have the whining like in the Apple Insider article.
The purple/blue (periwinkle!) is close but you're right the red maps they show everywhere are a little exaggerated. You can view the red map on the same page. "Broadband 3G Network Comparison"

Are the speeds of the networks compared roughly the same, or is the VZW map showing the old slow EV-DO and Rev A while only showing AT&T's faster side, thereby not being an equal comparison?

The Blue is native Verizon EV-DO Rev. A. The Yellow is Extended Broadband and is provided by roaming partners and may be Rev. A or Rev. 0.

Is the VZW map showing EV-DO **and** EV-DO Rev A, or is it all Rev A?

Look specifically at:
SE New Mexico
Central Nevada
NE Montana
NW and SW South Dakota
The big maps on display in the stores typically aren't labeled "3G only" maps, since they've been on display for several years now. They show 2G and 3G unless specifically labeled otherwise.
