What do I gain?

Country Roads

I am a former Alltel customer who migrated over to Verizon earlier this year. I am using the Samsung Renown at the moment and it's fine for my purposes. I have 11 folks currently in my calling circle and I am still using the $60 plan of Alltel's w/900 minutes. I know that if I get a new phone and want it at the promo price, I'll have to take a similar Verizon plan, but that only allows me 5 in my calling circle. I may not really need the extra six numbers, since so many of the people I know have Verizon already. I just want to be sure that I'm not missing anything by staying with what I have. I don't think so, but maybe I've missed something in the process. Comments?

I don't see a good reason to upgrade. If your phone was in pieces or on its last legs then yeah. But you have a working phone. No. I would not do it.

Upgrading your phone does not make you switch to a Verizon plan if you are on a current alltel plan if you do it in a store. I am not sure if it tries to force you to change a plan with an online upgrade. I process upgrades at Verizon Corp store everyday for customers with Alltel plans and they keep their plans all the time.

If you choose to upgrade to a smartphone, you can either change your plan to an Alltel smartpack plan or add the data feature to your current plan.

If you get a phone with an HTML browser, you will be billed per MB($1.99) of data used versus mins of use like your current alltel plan.

If you get a rogue or env touch, it will require at least the $10 data plan which gives you 25 mb of data usage on the device.

When I was in Tech the Alltel plans would not work with Verizon Smart phones. Maybe they changed since then. Keep in mind that most devices with full HTML browser require the Nationwide plan.

At first, verizon smart phones would only work on the Alltel Smartchoice plan. Now you can add the verizon data feature to any Alltel plan. In some cases it is better to move to the smartchoice to get nights at 7pm, unlimited text, and data if you have multiple smartphones.
