Checked out both the Tour and the new Curve II. Curve II seems to be more compact than the Tour. I input a url into both and both were ab out equal in loading up the web site. Both keyboards seem equally comfortable. I get that the Tour offers the GSM network and I get that the new Curve II has the optical mouse (and I've been reading about a lot of problems with the Tour's trackball). I believe the Tour has a bit more battery standby time (not talk time - they are pretty close) and higher resolution screen. I don't do a lot of travel outside the US. Thoughts on which one?
Thanks for your help!

The Curve 2 operates on the slower EVDO Rev 0 where the Tour uses the faster EVDO Rev A. The send, end, menu, and back keys on the Curve 2 were impossible to press. The keyboard on the Curve 2 is nicer than the Tour in my opinion because there are spaces between the keys. The Tour's screen is amazing and the trackball issues have been resolved.

the tour also has a better camera with a flash
...
Agreed on the 3.2 vs. 2.0 MP cameras. You're right.
...
Thanks for this info. I'm still reading about people returning Tours due to the trackball though. Otherwise, I agree with you. I'll go back and check the keyboards.

comes down to three main issues.
1. Do you need wifi?
2. Do you need global roaming?
3. Do you need a camera with a flash?
those are the main differences. If you answered yes to #2 and #3 I would go tour for sure.
Also, the tour 2 is supposed to be released in the first quarter of 2010. It will have a trackpad and wifi and global roaming.

Don't "need" Wifi (although a nice to have). I believe they both have it, though. Don't need global roaming. Don't "need" a flash, although a nice to have. I do believe the screen resolution on the Tour is higher and it seems that the speed is also. Tough choice. Thanks for your help.

I don't believe the Tour has wifi.
...
Both the Tour and the Curve 8530 do have wireless according to both the Verizon Wireless and Blackberry web sites.
...
The blackberry doesn't have wifi. Trust me, Im looking at mine right now, and I've had the phone for six months.
IT DOES NOT HAVE WIFI. The tour 2 will have wifi tho.

OK, thanks ... I'll ask about that. You may be right.
...
Both my statements are correct. You dont need to wonder.
Tour 2=wifi and trackpad
Tour 1=no wifi, and black trackball ☹️
...
Only thing that makes me wonder is the websites, but like I said ... I'll double check it. Any idea when the Tour 2 is due out? I know '10, but any idea when?
...
Ive heard rumors of anywhere from January to March.
my educated guess? I think they are going to push hard for the new tour especially after some of the issues with the current tour. I think you will see it by Mid Feb or sooner.

My wife has one. No Wi-Fi.
...
OK, thanks!
Now ... benefit of Wi-Fi on a BB? I presume it allows you to browse the web using Wi-Fi instead of cellular network ... which would be faster. And this presumes that you have access to a Wi-Fi network/hotspot. Other benefits? Is this the feature that allows you to tether up to a laptop and use the BB as a modem?

BTW, there's a difference between "wireless" and "wifi" on the Verizon website. If it has wifi, it will say the word wifi. If it doesn't have wifi, it won't say wifi.
There's minimal benefit to WiFi on most phones, unless they're built to need it. For a Blackberry, it's a good backup for when you can't get into the network, say in a marginal area or on an airplane. Wifi is only for data services, excluding text (that's on the cell network).
I never find Wifi to be faster than Verizon's signal, but I'm sure other people have found otherwise.
You will need to have access to a wifi hotspot, pay for wifi service somewhere, or steal bandwidth from some unsuspecting senior who didn't know to password protect their router.

But using a BB as a modem for a laptop doesn't require Wifi support?

No, it really has nothing to do with Wifi.

Bottom line:
Tour is more for the professional (enterprise-class) and Curve is trying to cater to more the personal users who are migrating over to WinMo & Android side of spectrum on smartphones...

ON THAT NOTE, what I'd really like to know is VZW going to upgrade that crap 4.7.xxx BBOS on the Tour to 5.0.xxx before the Tour2 comes out. That's going to piss some people off which is typical VZW a'la Storm1 versus Storm2... I mean come on, 5.0.xxx is stable, works great on Storm2 - why hold it? More testing??? Works great on Curve2...
