It's the network

When I set about looking for independent data, however, to confirm the superior performance of Verizon’s network, I was astonished to discover that I had managed to get things exactly wrong. Despite the well-publicized problems in New York and San Francisco, AT&T seems to have the superior network nationwide.

And the iPhone itself may not be so great after all. Its design is contributing to performance problems.

could AT&T's problem be the iphone? You mean Apple isn't the second coming?

It's not just AT&T that's taking the heat from customers who complaint about the poor radio of the phone. There are many reports from the UK about this. Remember that Cnet UK article naming it the worst phone in the world. (even though I think calling it 'the worst' is a bit exaggerated....)
Let's take into consideration that most people in the UK text, because their plans don't offer as many minutes as in the US. Still, people in the UK report dropped calls, etc etc.
