Question about another Early Upgrade

Hey guys, i was thinking of early upgrading to the LG EnV Touch phone which is now $50. But the kicker here is im afraid of sacrificing my 100 credit towards a new phone because i know i won't get another one. Would you guys care so much about this, or would you rather wait til its free?

phones are cheaper now for Christmas than they will be at other times.

If you need a new phone (or want a new toy) get the touch now. If you can wait, wait. who knows what you'll want to get when you have the credit.

weigh your options. You pay fifty bucks now for an EnV touch. Which is fine if you really want that phone. But when your credit comes in, what could you get for that same fifty bucks? maybe even for free? Droid? Eris? any number of really cool devices. Not that the Touch isn't good. But you could get so much more for the same price if not for less when your credit kicks in.

I think the answer is to focus on the phone and not the money. I've been seriously considering the enV Touch and now that it has been reduced to $50 (down from $100) there is little reason to wait if you really want it. If the price goes up again after the holidays it will cancel (at least partially) your NE2 credit. I've been looking closely at phones for a couple of months and the enV Touch is about the best non-smart phone available IMHO and only requires a minimum $10 data plan.

Regarding the Droid and Eris, they are smart phones and require a $30 data plan, the Eris does not have a QWERTY keyboard (virtual keyboard only) and the Droid QWERTY is quite inferior compared to the enV Touch. So think about the features you really wan...

The Droid and the envTouch aren't even comparable. The Droid is flat out amazing. (You're right the keyboard isn't fantastic at first, but it's not as bad as some people claim and the touchscreen is great.) And as for that data plan, for what you get data-wise, you actually get far more for your $30 compared to that $10 on a dumbphone. My daughter has the envtouch and went to that from a Palm Centro. She can't stand it and wants to go to a Blackberry. (A big complaint of LG is their really crappy inferior chargers) So if you're "focusing" on the "phone" in the name of saving $20, you're missing the bigger picture.

Well, my comparison of the Droid and enV Touch was limited to the specifics I mentioned. My point to the OP was to think about what he actually wanted in a phone and consider the TCO (true cost of ownership) Vs worrying about the discount. If he wants a smart phone then obviously he shouldn't get the Touch, but he wasn't clear about that.

From the point of view of functionality a smart phone such as the Droid or Eris is far ahead of the Touch. That doesn't change how I feel about the Droid's keyboard or the Eris' lack of a keyboard, but that is a personal preference. Since I don't need a smart phone the Touch is a good choice. If I did need a smart phone then I would be looking for one with features similar to the Touch. By the way, ...

Yeah, I agree. Individual features are very important. I bought my son a Dare and got him the (then $15.00/mo) data plan. And let's just say, the bill would come in much higher than that and it ended up being a bit shy of $30 anyway with games and subscriptions, etc. He really wished he had gotten the (then brand new Storm 1) and I kind of agreed. Now the data plan is at $10 I think for the non-smartphones, and I'm not sure what you get for that, exactly, it could be worth it. I'm just a little "gun-shy" about Verizon's seemingly inexpensive plans. However, for the record, my son still has and does love his Dare.

The data plan which was $15 was for Unlimited MB usage. Verizon does not offer it anymore. No there is the $9.99 25MB and $19.99 75MB options. I don't think those are better.

I guess they haven't changed my bill because I'm "grandfathered" in. It still says $15. That's what my daughter has for her env Touch also. But she wants to move to a blackberry soon. I wish they would offer smartphone share plans but I guess that's wishful thinking.

No. They won't take it away if you already have the feature. They just don't offer it anymore. Shared data for smartphones? No.
