So if I want to avoid the new $350 ETF I'd have to get and activate one of these phones on my account?

no, you can activate any device that doesn't have the 350 ETF. Why do you want to avoid it? are you planning on canceling? if so, get the phone of ebay/retail and don't sign a contract. Best way to get phones IMO.

If you want to get a phone without a 350 etf, you can choose any phone except the ones listed on this page:

are you planning on canceling?

Maybe. I'm lucky enough to live where all 4 major carriers offer excellent service and in my experience as much as I change phones GSM carriers are just that much easier.
