First off...VZW, ATT, Tmobile, etc, do NOT make the phones. They only sell the service. So if the manufacturers dont make simple feature phones w/ qwerty keyboards, touchscreens, and all the fancy phone features, dont yell at the carrier. Yell at the manufacturers. 450 minutes still costs $40. If it was about people use minutes less so we charge less, then why hasn't the price of 450 minutes gone down?
I would accept this argument IF the lower end of prices went down as well. This is simply a response to T-Mobile's unlimited minute plans. As a whole its a way to pull people into higher price plans. Its alot easier to sell a $70 unlimited plan than it is to sell a $100. So the little they lose from the people willing to pay $100 is made up by the many who will go from $50 -> $70.
If it was truely about minutes, then 450/900 minutes would go down $10/month, as well as unlimited, to make room for the data plans... then "those few idiots who only talk" would actually save mone...

I don't think that you really know how this business works. The manufacturers make phones what the wireless industry orders, not vice-versa. Also there many of us who just used the phone for talking. I personally don't care about texting, or going on the internet via the phone. I can bet that many people don't even use all the software many phones have to offer.
