Yes, if it was a phone that required data, no if it was made before the data requirement on smartphones.

So... it depends on the model.

Any Blackberry WILL require it.
Any Palm from the Centro back to the Treo 600 will not.
Samsung i760 and previous do not; Samsun i910 (Omnia) and later will.
HTC Touch 6900 and back do not; HTC Touch Pro and forward do.
Any Android will require it.
Any Palm WebOS (Pre/Pixi) will require it.

Requirements changed in November of 2008, and any new smartphone after the change required data.

If you have a model in mind, you can use Phonescoop's phone system to determine when certain models were released, as their system is quite comprehensive. Or you could just ask us here. You just need to know...

So Epik, if I understand you correctly, I bought a Palm Centro in 2008 before the requirement, had data blocked for a bit, then put the data plan on for awhile before switching to a blackberry. Now, if someone wants my old Centro, they CAN activate it on Verizon and NOT pay/block the data plan?

Exactly. The first non Blackberry VZW sold which VZW sold requiring a data plan was the Touch Pro 6950. I remember taking a call from a customer who was sent one in exchange for her 6800 and she sent it back because she refused the data plan.

What Azeron said.

I'm gearing up to sell some old phones online and milk the "doesn't require data" bit for all its worth.

Good luck with that. I hope it is the Black and not the Silver.

Cool. The Silver was a piece... They finally swapped me into a black one after ten or eleven silvers. I still have it.

I had one swap with my silver, and only because I toasted it while trying to upgrade something in the software. Still, I loved the phone, and never had a problem with it. I always thought it was weird how so many people had issues with theirs.

LOL So YOU had the only functioning Silver Q!

I tell you that the first software version that had no way to do a master reset was horrible! I remember the Q was the first smartphone they let us swap in the stores because of the high rate of defective ones. I would swap to a Fru and the Fru wouldn't work...nor the next...nor the next...customer would ask for the manager..., a Q? Let's take a look at..."

I definitely didn't have the issues that some people had. Of course, I was a lot more forgiving than some customers, too.

For instance, I carried two batteries every day. I used the desktop cradle, which had a battery charger on it. I'd charge the extended battery through the phone in the charger, and I had a standard battery always charged. I'd drop the standard battery and it's back into a little ziploc baggie and pocket it. I didn't always need to crack it open, but it was necessary on days where i got up early and worked late. I might have done the swap twice a week. Doing so seemed to keep my phone running well, thanks to those two battery pulls each week.

I also knew it wasn't the fastest phone (by ANY means). It got to t...
