I'm confused between Verizon's "New Every Two" and just renewing a contract.
This is what is posted in my account: "Eligible to upgrade with discounted pricing on 9/21/10. Eligible for New Every Two discount on 2/02/11. If you prefer, you can upgrade today at full retail price. Your contract end date is 06/02/10".
My ultimate goal is to get a Driod, but I don't know "when" I can do that (besides just buying it at full price/on ebay).
So it says my contract expires June; so if I get a phone from say, Newegg, Amazon, or Walmart where the phone requires a new contract, do I qualify? OR what is the difference between "new two year activation" and simply renewing the existing contract?

"Your contract end date is 06/02/10"
"Eligible to upgrade with discounted pricing on 9/21/10. Eligible for New Every Two discount on 2/02/11"
This is weird. I am wondering if an Assumption of Liability was performed. If the above IS correct then it is pretty straight forward. You will be out of contract BEFORE you will be eligible for any discounts. I had a line like this and I just canceled it. Should you choose to keep the line then you will be eligible for a one or two year discount pricing on 9/21/10 which is the same price as a new customer would receive OR you can stick it out until 2/2/11 and receive an additional $30 or %50 discount depending on your pricing tier. The drawback to canceling your line and then signing ...

yes, sorry, that is why the dates are kinda funky... assumption of liability was done... I was on my parents family plan, but moved to my own plan so i could get a smart phone last summer.
Now I am interested in the Driod so I'm trying to figure out the best way to get it.
Sounds like what you're saying though is I have to wait till at least september to qualify for any significant discount through any Verizon retailer.
...
Yeah, looks like September. I would maybe talk to them about it though. Being out of contract I could see them possibly working something out for you sooner and not making you wait.
...
I hate to say this...but what you may want to do is call to cancel once your contract is up (Sorry VZW reps). When you get a VZW save rep tell them your contract is up and you can't see yourself waiting until September when you can get an iphone at AT&T right now. *Shrug* It's just a bluff. I hate telling customers to do this, but the port out port back in thing is just so tedious and not worth the hassle honestly. Otherwise...yeah just wait until September. If you DO decide to do the port out...I have an idea you may wish to try. No need in going into it if you're not planning to do it.

Nowadays signing contracts is getting stupid, not bashing verizon but with all the options out there it just doesn't make sense, especially with advanced devices being $350.
...
Well, it would be nice if one could go full retail on every phone purchase, but only T-Mobile gives a break on service pricing if one goes that route. If one is already a VZW customer and not planning to go anywhere in any case , then the ETF could be a million dollars and not matter. When I was loyal and never planning to leave I upgraded just to sell the new eq on Ebay. Those days are long gone. I am like a spouse waiting for the right moment to divorce. It's not a matter of if but rather when I leave.
...
Times are changing personally giving much more thought about signing new contracts, particularly with verizon.
Here is where I sit currently: Line recently out of contract, so put my Motorola Barrage on PP working beautifully! (1,200 Minutes + 1,200 Text/MMS Messages + 50 MB Data) $29.99
My other phone is a Nextel 8350i I have that on the Boost unlimited plan, and just bought a card from a guy on eBay where the card is automatically applied to my account for $47.58.
I did the service books on my 8350i so everything works like a normal BB. I even downloaded shangmail so I get push email.
I dunno about signing a contract anymore.

It's still all but impossible to get a smartphone (that you actually intend on using the data) on one of those prepaid plans and have it remain cost effective.
On top of that, my first few phones were tracfone's, and they were a nightmare with customer service.. so I'll never have a straight talk line
...
Impossible? smartphone? Sure it boils down to individual needs but my 8350i is fully functional with 4G with my Sprint Overdrive! Working so well it's going to be my only ISP very shortly.
...
Have you seen the list of smartphones you can but on the CDMA side of Boost nowadays?, on the $50 dollar plan! I'm not trying to be argumentative just talking here but it's pretty bad ass just what you can do today, to get away from these evil carriers rules.

Boost has no coverage anywhere near me.
and if you are using an overdrive, you have a contract (unless sprint is finally allowing month to month)
I don't have a contract with my line either. I haven't for three years, and thanks to a family plan, I am paying under $50 a month for unlimited data/texting and more minutes than I'll ever use.
Contract companies will need to change, but the prepaid offerings need to get a lot better before they start posing a threat capable of att, verizon, etc taking notice. I hope they do, but unless I was in an area that offered MetroPCS, I wouldn't consider prepaid companies.
...
Good to know but I wasn't trying to convince you to get Boost! 🤣 nor did I saying prepaid offering were a threat but they sure have come along ways, and could make a lot more sense for many people considering verizon new rules. I think people should just take a pause before signing contracts with so many options.
With the EPRP through Sprint the Overdrive was a great deal.

I agree, people need to stop thinking cheap phone price when it comes to what it locks them into.
I am also a techie by nature, so laying out a couple hundres dollars whenever I want a new toy means I waste less money in the long run (if I was on contract, I would get a new device every year easily)
...
Yeah, even if you signed a contract, I would advise going with the One Year. Yes the phone is $70 more and No NE2, but NE2 is a ripoff anyway. With a one year, you can upgrade every ten months. I've said it time and time again...there is NO WAY I sign a two year contract on a secondary line. No annual upgrade and stuck in the phone for twenty-two months with only a twelve month manufacturer's warranty.
...
Jay had Clear with no contract. He paid $50 for the 4G data card and that was full retail price. Granted the 3G/4G device they had for full price was $279, but if one goes through Clear rather than Sprint...no contract required.

That's clear though. He specifically said 4g overdrive, which is a sprint device.
clear is no contract.
...
Oh. Well what the heck is he thinking? Screw the Overdrive. Clear is the way to go. Sprint won't let you buy a phone full retail with no contract. Oh no! No way!
...
Have you considered Page Plus? I have talked seven people into signing up with them here. Verizon coverage with Unlimited Talk and Text for $40. It can't be beat, particularly if you already have your own VZW handset.
