Potential New Verizon Customer

I recently tried Sprint but the coverage was so bad (I live in Las Vegas - Summerlin actually) - that I returned it under their 14 day policy. I hear that Verizon has better coverage (not only here but in many parts of the USA) - here are my questions:

1) Are there any Las Vegas/Summerlin Verizon users that can tell me how their coverage is and whether they have a decent signal in most parts of Las Vegas.

2) Also, we may be moving next year to the California Central Coast (SLO/Pismo Beach) area - how are Verizon's signals there?

3) I keep reading that a couple of new phones will be arriving shortly (LG 8100 and the Motorola 815) that will be a great improvement - would it be better for me to take out a new contract AFTER those pho...

Thanks for your reply

No, I am quite aware of the Verizon map; however, I know there are dead spots and was just wondering where they might be in my area.

As far as the phones: according to what I read both phones should be out by summer. Is that not true? I still feel that waiting three months is not that big of a deal if I can get a good phone with $150 knocked off for being a new customer.

It's possibly true but when the LG 8000 was supposed to come out "end of october of 2004" and that was from an LG rep at a technology expo at the Verizon wireless music center. It didn't come out until after christmas around february.. Taking that into effect...I'm guessing very late summer p...

just an addition to what you said, is that 8 or so years ago when i went to LV with my sprint phone it worked fine and had no problems what-so-ever. my dad had verizon back then and there were no problems either.

one thing to say is that both carriers are on cdma, so both should have pretty much the same or similiar coverage. i belive if you would have problems with sprint you could also face problems with verizon.

try the 15 day or whatever policy verizon has down there and just try it. see if it works well in your area, and if it doesnt try another carrier. make sure that carrier is right for you!

Everything you say is logical. I heard that the LG 8000 was a great phone but was bulky and cumbersome (and that is supposedly where the 8100 would be better).

Also, yes, I could try Verizon on the 15 day trial, however, I am pretty sure it will be better than Sprint. My neighbor has Verizon and has a great signal - as I stated before: Sprint did not have a great signal where I live. Also, a lot has happened to Las Vegas in eight years - the population has doubled for one thing and it's a completely different city than it was in the 90s!

I am up against the mountains - the Red Rock Mountains west of the Strip (although I am only about a 20 minute drive to the Strip).

aww i miss the strip. well if your in the mountains, typically the provider with 1.9ghz would be better becuase 1.9 can travel further then 800mhz carriers. 800mhz carriers are better with in-building coverage. thus; i am suprised when you said sprint wasnt good, becuase when i went to the strip it worked fine.

actually about the 1900 traveling farther I think you are mistaken, 800 travels farther than 1900 according to tech support, I am in Florida and most of the state works off 1900mhz, I was told, from tech support, that we have more towers/cell sites than any other state because we are primarly 1900 mhz and 800 travels farther, I might be wrong but I am just repeating what teir 2 tech support told me about a week ago

according to my tech people they told me that 1.9ghz travels farther, but 800mhz is better in-building. there are more towers for 1.9ghz becuase it is harder to trasmit signals that require penetration of buildings. 800mhz spectrum you dont need a lot of towers for especially if you are in a heavy concentrated area for building penetration becuase it is stronger then 1.9ghz.

yea, thats not right.

1. 800mhz is stronger when it comes to in-building penetration, but isnt great when it comes to distances.
2. 1.9ghz goes further but isnt that great in-building.

hope that helps 🙂

No. 800 mHZ travels further. Better building penetration as well. Same basic principle as to why AM radio waves travel further than FM.

not according to the RF/tech people who i deal with on a regular basis say. i said that the 800mhz band has better building penetration then 1.9ghz. 1.9ghz transmits further.

Nope. The higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength = smaller broadcast radius.

if your right then your right, but the thing is, how come if the highier the freq you get lets say in the 2.5ghz range (wimax bound) it says that you can go up to 30 miles ? (instead of 1.9ghz where you said you cant go that high)

if i was mis-informed or maybe didnt understand what they said or made i twisted the words or what not, thats my fault. sorry.

again, if your right, i thank you for the clarification.

please answer the question though.

Here is a quote from an independent source:

http://www.sunmantechnology.com/resources/gwireless. ... »

"On average, 800 MHz sites are spaced about 10-12 km (6-8 mi) apart and 1900 MHz sites are spaced about 3-4 km (2-2.5 mi) apart."

Given your argument, why is the effective range of WiFi so small. WiFi operates in the 2+ GHz range....

thank you for the clarification. again, i probably mis-understood them. its not a problem, and i thank you.

i am not sure about the WIFI so small. my other argument is why is wimax is in the 2.5ghz plus range and it can go up to 30 miles. who knows i guess.

thanks again.

goodnight.

I'm actually in Siena (Summerlin South) - 215 and Flamingo - I can drive straight down Flamingo and be on the Strip in about 20 minutes and also take the 215 and be at McCarran in 20 minutes.

How is your Cingular coverage in Summerlin?

I used to have Verizon, it sucked in Ca (lots of dead areas), but I will state that was a while ago. im sure things have improved. Im now with Cingular, and OMG.....its a world of difference. I have full coverage most of the time. There isnt going to be any carrier with perfect coverage. After reading some of the Cingular bashing on here....it seems to me they are just stupid customers that think Ca is local to NY residents. At any rate...try Cingular, they give you 30 days (the only to do so) to try the service.
