is VZW out of their tree?

I went yesterday for a new every 2 upgrade. I wanted the LG VX7000. They wanted $100 w/2 yr contract!
Do they know there are competitors in the NYC market? Then he quoted me a "generous" 10% discount on a handfree and a USB data cable!

I've got plenty of co-workers with both Cing and T. While I've never been a fan of either and I know VZW has a better network, none are having problems in the area. I'd think that VZW would try to be a bit more competitive in the area.

The phones cost them next to nothing from Korea. Combined with the profit model for the phone call itself.... I think they do pretty well on even the average non biz user, let alone a volume user like myself.

Guess it's time to change.

Thanks for your post justpeachy, I was sitting here readingit and just shaking my head, this is the typical consumer whothinks that $100 for a Video, camera, internet, dual color, etc. phone is too much, I remember just 3 or 4 years ago the 5160 was selling for $100 with a new 2 year contract, and the 2160 was selling for $300 a couple of years before that. The average consumer has gotten completly spoiled.

Because of the handset subsidies the consumer has lost touch with the value of the product. If they had to pay the full price of that handset plus the retailers profit they would be very surprised at how much the phones cost.
That VX3200 would retail for about $200.00 and the VX7000 would be between $350.00-$400.00.
The wireless carriers have really shielded the consumer from the real price of the phones.

I would bet that without the subsidizing, a lot of people that have cell phones now, would probably not have them if they had to pay full price, so this works out for the customer and the company, and by the way, phones should be subsidized, the carrier programs them and decides which one's you can use and can not use, so untill I can goto the store and buy any cdma phone to use, they damn well better be subsidized if a person chooses to take advantage of a subsidized phone.....

You're right. Without phone subsidies the wireless industry would be way less than it is. In other countries the subsidies are not legal but Americans buy things differently than the rest of the world. Your statement that they better be subsidized proves my point. And so the subsidies continue to the delight of the consumer and the dismay of CU.

Is $100 too much? Last December we got a 7000 free with NE2 and 2 more free with it. If Verizon could do that in December they can do it now. They make the rules. Why don't they make them consistent?

I was wondering the same thing. Right now, the VX7000 is 99.99 with a new 2 year contract. If metropical is eligible for NE2, he would get the phone free.

in my store (a verizon corporate store), the 7000 is 149.99 - 100ne2 credit = 49.99. then you get the $50 mir, so that leaves you with a grand total of 0 dollars. what more do you want from a phone which was rated #1 for VZW for consumer reports in february 2005?

I can see in Verizon's case where subsidized phones should stick around.

But with GSM becasue of the many phone choices and SIM card flexibility I think there should be a choice for a subsidized phone or lower priced plan for those who buy phones OTC.

I prefer buying my phones as one can get them on Ebay at a discount and avoiding the LT contract obligations. Im all for no subsidized phones or at least the choice in buying and getting them at BEst Buy, CC, and or Wal Mart at huge discounts.

The industry would suffer if there were nothing but unlocked phones. Leaving these decisions to the WalMart buyers would result in a much more limited phone selection slanted very heavily toward the lower end.
It is best to keep WalMart, Target and the like out of the industry for as long as possible.
Discounters do nothing for the development of high tech industries like wireless. In fact they destroy it. I for one do not want to see WalMart's level of expertise involved in wireless. They had Sprint PCS phones for a while but could not sell them because people preferred to go to RadioShack or the Sprint store and get some real service. Their training program is laughable. When I worked for them I got bored and passed all of their Electro...

The big difference is the way it would stifle the industry. There would be absolutely zero reason for the manufacturers to develop new phones with updated features if they won't sell because the consumer won't pay for them. Then what would be the incentive for the wireless industry to invest in new network technologies? If it were like that now we would all be either on analog or TDMA. The largest carriers in the industry might have a few million customers.
What you are saying would be appropriate for a mature industry like the landline phone system, but not for an emerging industry like the wireless industry. Until the industry matures it is best to keep it out of the hands of cutthroats like WalMart who will redesign it according to thei...

Before you get hasty I think you need to know that all wireless companies lose substantial amounts of money on handsets. Check some of the dealers to see if they are more competitive. I kind of doubt it. $100.00 for that phone is more than generous.
That phone costs Verizon way more than the price they offered it to you.

Bingo. I myself would be stoked to get a 7K for $100, as was offered to the orginal poster.

Thus, VZW is subsidizing two-thirds of the cost of the phone... and yet he's still unhappy? Whaaa? 😳

Its not like he couldn't get a cheaper phone for free or next to free, if that's all he cares about. Just plain puzzling.

You just cant please some people, the average customer wants everything for free, than if you dont give it to them they think your cheating them, we have to make a profit or else we cant pay the bills!

The 100 price is for the phone and accessories. 50 for the phone and 50 for the accessories. AND before a 50 mail in. Something schmuckles forgot to mention. You final price for that phone on new every two will be nothing. The only thing in the end you will be paying for is the 50 dollar acc bundle. (car charger, leather case, and headset) 80 dollar value for 50 bucks on the accessories. I think you heard what you wanted to hear and didn't look to much into the deal. The phone will end up being free. At least in the midwest market it would be on new every two.

I don't think the sales rep fully explained everything to you.

The price of the VX7000 with a new 2 year contract is $99.99 (after $50 mail-in Rebate). You are eligible for NE2, so you would pay $50 at the store and get a $50.00 MIR, which would make the phone FREE with a NE2 upgrade.
