Question for Verizon Experts....

So...

Is EV-DO backward compatable with CDMA IS-95 and CDMA 1x?

Does verizon run a legacy network (seperate transponders on each tower) for the older standard?

Do EV-DO phones have to be dual band for the older standards?

How many transponders need to be on a towers in urban areas?

the reason i ask....

I live in the midwest and the towers look like they have not been updated in quite some time.

They have what appears to be aluminum antenas on the top, some of them have the modern transponders (they look like a perfectly round satellite dish in reverse) many of them do not. Some of these towers that have the aluminum antenna only are verizon towers. Now i've heard that 100% of the network is EV-DO, is is possible to br...

I do not know the hardware specifics for cell sites but if you give me the address I can tell you if the site is evdo or 1xrtt. Other then that most other of the information would be considered proprietary.

I will need a bit more info then that.. Way back in the day I was working in a retail store on the otherside of the country. 🙂 I understand that you do not want to tell us all where you live so I will throw you a bit of a bone... I am showing all of our cell sites in SD are evdo. We do have roaming contracts once you get off the main roads and not all of them are '3g'..

Hope this helps. Maybe someone will know the hardware side.

I don't believe EVDO requires a separate antenna. It's only been a couple years since we got EVDO here and I'm almost positive no equipment was added to the tower. The antennas are usually the white panels that are tall and skinny. All Verizon phones are dual band capable. EVDO is only for data and all voice travels via 1X.

Well, I'm a scientist in training, so I know about as much about AT&T's architecture as I do Verizon's (since I study them all) but I'll try to answer a few of your questions.

Is EV-DO backward compatable with CDMA IS-95 and CDMA 1x?

1xRTT is completely backward compatible with IS-95, but I would be shocked to learn of IS-95 still being used anywhere in North America.

EV-DO is a more complicated matter. EV-DO rev0 is actually a download-only technology! All of the data transmission from the mobile to the base stations actually still carried at 1xRTT rates! Rev0 is actually 50% 3G and 50% 2G!

Ev-DO revA, however, is a 3G technology both upstream and downstream. While almost every EV-DO tower in North Ame...
