Texting Problem Between Verizon CDMA Phone and European GSM Phone

🤭 I bought an unlocked quad-band GSM phone and a European SIM card with a +44 UK phone number, for an upcoming trip to Europe. I loaned the phone to a friend who just arrived in France after traveling from the USA. When I, or others, send text messages to my GSM phone in Europe, the messages don't arrive. Similarly, text (SMS) messages sent from Europe are not arriving back here on my Verizon Wireless CDMA phone. Voice is working fine @ $0.46 per minute to call back to a USA cell phone or $0.30 per minute to a USA landline. Text messages would be free to receive in Europe and $0.15 per message to send back to the USA (if they worked).

Thanks for the link CellStudent. It might, as you wrote, be relevant. But, I tried the 011441234567890 method and the 011+441234567890 method after clicking around the website this morning. Messages still didn't go through eastbound either way.

We had the same problem only going west; my lovely wife is from Indonesia and for a loooong time Vz didn't support texting to Indo at all; finally solved the problem by getting everyone BB's. BBM works just fine but I know your problem is diferent.

I can't know in advance which of the European carriers will be carrying my calls. There are several potential carriers in each country, depending on geography.

Only the 8 or 9 U.K. carriers listed in that link are certified to inter-operate with Verizon Wireless.

If you don't know who your service provider is, you CAN'T know that SMS will be fully functional.
