I think the phone should be able to handle gingerbread. Beyond that, I dont know.
Google is working closely with moto on 2.2 for the droid, maybe they do the same for 2.3?

as consumers, we will NEVER have the "best and the greatest" because as soon as we buy it, they'll announce the next thing. That's how the process works.
You'll ALWAYS hear announcements about some new device. The incredible is a great phone. the droid is STILL a great phone, even with the new ones coming out.
when those two new moto's are released, there will be rumors of NEW phones coming (Droid Pro, incredible 2, whatever), and when those are released, there will be new rumors again.
Once you find a phone that does what you need, buy it. Yes, it will be outdated, but you'll NEVER buy a phone that won't be outdated unless you purchase from a company going out of business or one that artificially limits their production cycle.

Also, the Incredible is back ordered because Samsung can't keep up with demand for the OLED screens that are in the Incredble. It's a fine device, but it's out of stock, and will continue to be for probably at least 2 more weeks, by which time these new Moto Droids will be out on the market.

I trust you know I was making a joke. Marketing classes sound like a good way to "get" how things work and get off the treadmill, but whatever it takes. I've known folks who have trouble with feeling their stuff is second rate as soon as the next thing comes out - it's tough for them.
