So when is a phone just TOO BIG?

Is it just me, or are we going backwards? Those of you who remember the cell phones of the late 80's and early 90's will know what I mean. They used to be big and bulky with a battery that could barely make it through an entire day. Sound familiar? We seem to be there again. For a while we had nice, compact phones that would last almost a week between charges. Now we're back to slabs that barely fit into a pocket. And don't even get me started about battery life. Look, I like all the cool stuff the new smartphones can do. I love having the internet in my pocket, and it's nice to have a big screen to view it on. But sooner or later these phones are going to grow past the point of true portability. I don't want a big goofy looking h...

I agree w/u on the increasing screen sizes! I currently use a Moto Droid that has a 3.7in screen, which I'm very happy with. But I would be willing to use the new Samsung Epic 4G that's coming out on Sprint later in the year. It has a beautiful
4in Super AMOLED display w/slideout keyboard.

So I think a 4in display is the very biggest I'd be willing to go.

I guess it all depends on how you prefer to carry a phone. If you don't mind having a case or holster on your belt, great...you can carry a phone the size of an ipad. But if you're like me and you'd rather carry it in your pocket, there is going to be a limit to how big you're gonna want. I think a 4" screen is pushing that limit for ...

Oh, I don't have a problem with holster. The only people who seem to have a problem wearing belts are black people with their pants fallling down all the time.

I have a nice brown leather holster I bought from a website called Pocket Solutions, I've had the same holster for 2yrs.

Dude..before you make a generalized statement like that you should see all the white and Mexican kids around here who do the same thing. It looks equally as stupid regardless of the person doing it.

To each his own I guess. I just don't like holsters.

For one thing, I usually only wear a belt for work or church. When I'm just bummin' around in the evenings or on a weekend I usually have on jeans or shorts with no belt. In my experience, holsters and cases tend to fall off if they're clipped on your waistband. They need a belt to be secure.
I don't know...I used to use a holster all the time. But now I just personally think a guy looks a little geeky with a big phone strapped to his belt. I'd rather just have it in my pocket. Just personal preference.

yes guys the smart phones are getting bigger but thats what you get for having a mini computer in you pocket. Jay the comment that you made about black people is just retarded and makes you sound the same. If you guys don't like the the smart phones please do us all a favor and stick with a simple phone.

1. What was that for?
2. How would that be doing you a favor?
3. I've been using a smart phone for two years.

Maybe instead of being a smartass, you could just join in the dicussion. I take it from your comment that you're not bothered by the increased size of the new phones. Just currious..how do you like to carry your phone?

Sorry but I do agree about the size I do. But in that regard people want the next best thing more memory, bigger procceser, longer battery life on a smart phone. Sorry but I do stick by my words about the racial thing. I carry mine in my pocket as well and yes there a pain but in business you know they just meet the supply with the demand. So to do so add all the things people want the phone has to be a little larger than others. Like I said I am sorry about the comment yesterday was in a real bad mood.

No problem. And I agree 100% about the racial comment posted by the other person. It was un-called for.

Yes, I know there are still compact phones out there. The problem is, they're just phones. As I said in my original post, I like all the advancements in the new smartphones and all they can do. I just hope they stop making them bigger and bigger. I hope at least a few brands will continue to put the "latest & greatest" into their new models without thinking everyone wants a 6" screen to go with it. It's the same thing with laptops. My wife wanted a new laptop with a big screen. She got it. Now she has a big, heavy laptop. It's barely portable and she will sometimes opt to leave it at home when she might have otherwise take...

The market answer how big is too big. I think the EVO is as close too big as confort will allow as a "phone". There be Android Pad very soon. But whats wrong a large phone? Its a tool not a fashion statement. Also why did you buy a LUGABOUT?

Nothing is "wrong" with a large phone other than simple portability. When a phone gets to be too big to carry comfortably in a pocket, in my opinion, it's too big.

Lugabout? If you mean my wife's laptop, she needs it for work. She has multiple spreadsheets and powerpoint presentations on it. Smartphones have come a LONG way, but they can't replace a dedicated computer...yet.

That puts the screen at very comfortable 2.41 x 3.32 inches. Oh, and do everything humanly possible to minimize the width of the phone to around 2.75 inches. It can be as tall and "deep" as necessary (fitting a fat 2000+ mAh battery would be my ideal).

I would be totally fine with pocketing a 5.25 x 2.75 x 0.5 phone that weighed in at around 6 oz everywhere I went, especially if I only had to charge it once every 36 hours.

OK...this is going to sound really dumb, but I was curious as to just how big the Droid X was, so I made a cardboard cut-out. I used the dimensions posted on the Motorola web site (65.5mm x 127.5mm x 9.9mm). I couldn't do the 9.9mm thickness, but I did the height and width. Man, that's a big phone. It feels like the old Motorola Piper flip-phone I had in '92. I guess I could get used to it, but....wow.

Eventually we'll have a morphing phone... small in pocket, big in lap.
