I am at a bar with my iPhone using buddy. I have a Droid Eris. We are wondering why I can download any song I want through Mp3 downloads for free and he can't. I do not want rto start a flame war, but am only interested in the licensing and itunes etc. I told him...Menno will know!
...
BTW, I told him Jobs isn't about to let iPhone users download free stuff when he can charge .99 a song thru itunes. That being said, we again are more interested in the legality and intellectual property aspect.

Most of those apps are kind of like Napster was back in the day. But instead of it being Peer to Peer, the songs are hosted on websites, and the program searches for them.
While there are some royalty free mp3's out there, a good chunk of the ones found by apps like that would be "pirated." That's the reason you can't get them on the iphone. they wouldn't pass the approval process (most are removed after a time in android as well)
that being said, amazonmp3 is actually a great on device purchaser for legal song downloads. And since they are mp3, you can do whatever you want with them once you have them.

Thanks Menno, but does itunes have any bearing on the free vs .99 download? BTW I'm a Ball State grad

eh, not really. Itunes just locks you to using a single computer to sync, and only one option for music.
Android allows other options for music (there is amazonmp3, google working on their own version, which most likely WILL have free titles)
And I went to IWU myself
...
IWU? Which/where is this one? I do recall you saying you went to school somewhere in the midwest.
...
I think Indiana Wesleyan University. I'm in Indiana as well.

It's a small world, after all, it's a small world after all..

The essential question is why does Droid do free downloads and iPhone doesn't?

because Droid doesn't have an app approval process for the app store like apple. whereas apple catches potentially illegal download apps before they reach market, Android allows these apps through and then removes them if they actually break copyright laws.

As always, you are the Android master! Do you think free music downloads on android is a selling feature or a hush-hush feature we don't want taken away?

It's def not something they'll advertise.
biggest selling point for android for people is just learning it yourself and showing people what you can do with it.
I've sold three of my friends on the platform showing them the wireless syncing capabilities of the device.

I realize the need to keep it quiet, but its just another example of 'The Droid Does.'

Hmm, well I have 2 apps, MP3 Search & MP3 Download both of which allow me to d/l *free* songs.
