Antivirus for smartphones

My Droid X is my first true smartphone and I'm amazed at how these things really are like having a computer in your pocket. With all they can do on-line and all the apps and things you can download and run, it just seems to reason that a good antivirus program would be wise to have. I saw a free one called Lookout in the Android Marketplace so I decided to give it a try. Everythings seems ok (I guess) but my battery seems to have dropped faster than normal today. Is this a normal side effect to running antivrus? Is the one I'm using a good one? Is there a better one? Any suggestions are appreciated!

I really don't think an anti-virus program is really needed. As far as I know there aren't really any viruses that affect phones like they do computers. Same thing goes for Mac computers, it's just not needed. Generally your phone won't even open or read the type of files that viruses are in or the phones don't have the same exploits that the computers have that the viruses take advantage of.

I saw someone say something interesting a while back and I tend to think it may be true. They said there are no viruses for our phones so all the Anti-Virus programs out there are pretty much hoaxes. In the end they're really only out to get your personal information or things of that nature because they aren't protecting you from viruses.

Actually, it's an inevitability. Someone will always find a stack overflow flaw and exploit it.

I do agree that these anti virus programs for phones are unnecessary (for now). When phones become targeted that'll be a different story, but for now it's not that financially worthwhile to target phones.

virus no malware yes. Norton has a great program that scans all apps you download and install.

I have to admit that I'm kinda surprised by the number of people who think antivirus isn't really necessary for a smartphone. Just think about what all you do with your phone and what information is available on it. I do electronic banking from it, I access my credit card account from it, I log into tons of websites...the list goes on. I would think that there are many reasons for hackers to target smartphones. Especially with Android being such an open market, it'd be pretty easy for someone with the right skills. I definitely see smartphones as the next big target for hackers and cybertheft.

because people think malware and syware are the same thing as a virus. They are NOT. and there is no virus currently known for android or iphone OS. but their is malware programs and spyware programs. that is a must. Norton is the best solution I have found. While its still a beta it works good from what I can tell and does live updates.
